Coyote in the city

Alright, so for the past 3 years or so we've been picking off the squirrels in our yard every morning. I think we've shot about 250 of the buggers since we started. They chew the hell out of our flashing and get into the attic and chew wires, etc, so we started eliminating the problem. Normally we collect them after they've been shot and throw them into the woods behind the house to get them out of the yard. Well, apparently we've missed a few, because we woke up one morning and saw this guy scrounging around for leftovers...

Keep in mind that we're in the middle of a city here in north central Florida. I've never seen a coyote anywhere near here, but low and behold, here's one in my own back yard. We do have a system of creeks flowing throughout the city that eventually runs by a hundred meters or so from the house, so maybe he's been sticking to those and making his way deeper and deeper into the city... Anyway, thought it might interest some of you guys!

are there...they are there to stay. Here in Ohio I haven't heard of them in town..yet.Lot's of stories from the folks in the country about them taking small pet dogs and such:eek:Found tracks yesterday about 50ft. behind my house..since I have a wolf hybrid...don't think they will get any closer than that:thumbup::D:D

We had one running around my house also, wasn't big at all but scared the crap out of my wife. We live in a townhouse community in suburban CT. I thought it was strange to see them, but at least they're keeping the loud attack turkey away.:D Now I can sleep late again.

Great pics man, thanks for sharing.

I remember seeing on the news that there was one running around in downtown Detroit. I occassionally see pheasants in downtown Detroit on the way to work - adaptable little critters.

I live in the suburbs, but there's a well known den of them maybe a mile away in a park. And yes, it is near a major creek, so its probable that they use them for transportation.

I'm just a few miles outside of Detroit and can vouch for the Coyotes in the area. I've seen 'em several times near Interstate 94 between Metro Airport and Detroit. I've also seen 'em along RR tracks and the Rouge River which is the southern border of Detroit and an industrial area.

We've also got deer, hawks, falcons, fox, and, as Bwilson said, pheasant making a huge comeback in the Detroit area. Wild Turkey are being seen in the suburbs as close as 30 miles outside the city. Sounds like a long distance but check a map. Detroit's suburbs are infinite.

Won't be long 'til the cities recommend against leaving pet food outdoors.

Yotes are the supreme predator. They may not be as large as the wolf, or have the nose of a fox, but they are much better survivors. There have been documented cases of coyotes living on grasshoppers and wild berries, not eating any meat at all. Then there are pack coyotes that hunt caribou, and everything in between.

Cool pics. I live in a town of about 80,000 just into California's central valley and we are surrounded by agriculture. I am a few miles into town, and my house backs up to a defunct RR line. Occasionally I will see them running the tracks in the early AM or late evening.

I have seen them running in the creek behind my house. I did not believe the neighbors when they said that they were there, and that I should watch out for the little weenie dog when it is in the yard.......One day there they were running my fence line when my LAB/Sheppard mix hit the scene to step in and run them off. Mini dachshunds are stupid, I don't know what she thought her nine pounds were going to do, but she thought she was fierce.

They are all over the place in and around Fresno.

At my old apartment you could hear them at night sometimes. Not sure why people trip out on them so much for though , we got racoons , possum's , quail and the occassional fox to boot.

With hunting on a steady decline, the coyote will be a natural control to the crazy deer population, here in the North East. Also, I heard there are wolves in the Catskills and they are also expanding their range.

Dachshunds are bred for chasing Badgers in their holes and dragging them out. I don't know if they are stupid or if they simply have no fear.
I personally would go after a Coyote long before I'd go into a hole after a Badger.

Wow, I had no idea coyotes were so adaptable! I wouldn't necessarily call it a problem yet... as far as I know the 'yote hasn't taken any pets or anything, and I think we're the only ones who have seen it thus far... Not going to worry too much about it for the moment... if we start having problems I might have to try out my trapping skills! :D

Oh, and as for the squirrel problem, its mostly taken care of... I think we might shoot one or two a week now. Maybe not even that many. At first we were picking off 10 a day. Since our immediate area is more or less clear of them now, the only ones we get are the ones who find a squirrel-less tract of land and think they've found squirrel heaven... and then we help them to find the real squirrel heaven! :p

We have cayotes in Atlanta now. Don't dare shoot one... Call the govt.

I lived in Los Angeles for 35 years. I have no idea how many coyotes (four legged) I've seen right in the middle of the city.

As said above, coyotes are extremely adaptable and can live almost anywhere.

Coyotes are awesome predators. They're clever creatures that can and have adapted to nearly every enviroment in and probably out of North America. As some of you have stated they will hunt almost anything. In packs they are quite capable of taking larger animals although they won't get near my horse. I've read reports of female coyotes in heat luring domestic dogs into the rest of the pack for an easy meal. I came home one day to find my APBT fighting off a couple looking for an easy meal. They got pretty mangled and havn't been back since. We live about twenty miles south of Denver and theyre pretty common in the suburbs and I'm sure they're are some fairly close to the city.
