Coyotes in the news

I hog hunt at least every 3 months but havent lately. Austin is only about 60 miles away. What do you want to hunt them with?

I have a type 44 russian carbine but am in the market for a sks if I cab find one thats priced right I guess they have really gone up I used to pick up russian sks's for 175 and chinese for 80-100 don't know what happened, needless to say i'm having a real hard time paying 200-250 for a chinese or a yugo. I'm just starting my firearm collection had to sell everything off about 10 years ago and now I got the itch again. I haven't been hunting since I was a kid and I guess I'm tryin to get back into the things I put on hold or that fell by the wayside for a little while. Anyway hog hunting sounds like a good time and after tasting wild hog a month or so ago now I want to give it a shot and it seems like everybody wants them gone so I assume it's pretty easy to find a place without paying a bunch of money to do it. I've never hunted with a rifle where i'm from we had to use slug guns so I also have a 12 ga with a slugbarrel

I have a few of those moisen nagants and a few SKS's. What I meant was with what do you want to hunt with(Guns, Knives, Bows, Spears, Ect). Do you want to blind hunt or stalk hunt? I will let you know if I find any places to hunt anytime soon.

Bow hunters in this area (NE Ohio east of Cleveland) repeatedly report packs of 4-8, and I have seen one (7) at a couple hundred yards distance. Several large dogs have been killed, but they were chained and alone. Smaller dogs and cats apparently fill the groundhog nitch and lots of them "disappear." 'Course, we also have problems with packs of dogs, especially with attacks on the many llama and alpaca operations in this semi-rural area. When I and the wife walk in the nearby park, I carry something appropriate, but more on general principle than due to this particular hazard.

I figured on a firearm, I'm not much for runnin but as far as stalk or blind I guess that doesn't matter much. Probably blind hunting would be the easiest to start out with. I've never hog hunted just rabbits, squirrels, phesants and deer when I was a kid so this is all new to me, even baiting is a new concept because it's illegal back home so I guess I'm open.

I usually stalk hunt them it is a whole lot more fun and I have more sucess. A buddy of mine was having a problem with hogs and I went to help him cut the numbers a bit. We came across a herd of 70+ or at least thats where we quit counting and started shooting.

I have to admit I've only read the first page of this thread, as I have to get my butt to work, but I've been around coyotes a good deal and knock on wood" have never had a problem...I think problems as earlier described ar more likely the work of "coy" dogs or coyotes that have interbred with feral dogs...This subspecies can sometimes be larger than standard coyotes, and have lost the natural fear of humans...Coyotes are remarkable animals and posess an adaptability that should make any survival enthusiast jealous...They are one of my favorite animals...although as a youngster I had to send a few of them back to coyote heaven..when they got in to the chicken coop...Once they know it's there they'll just keep coming. It was like a buffett

BEst thing to do is get a nice strong pit-bull. That'll make the coyotes associate dogs with pain, not food. My pit hunts coyotes for fun.

I have a strong pit but I wouls hate to turn him loose around here for fear of him killin the neighbors dogs. He's great with females but get him near a male and he'll kill him or in the very least cripple him

Chicago coyote update!!!
I was wondering if I would get to post this before you did.

Anyway, just another sign in Marcinek's apocalyptic vision of wild animals running amok in Chicago.

Perhaps the vanguard for the invasion? Or is Quizno's prime rib that good?

coyotes or getting to be a problem in PA. two of my neighbors put llamas in their pastures to help keep their cattle safe.
one neighbor had to shoot one that was after his prize bull.

and i have tracks less than 50 feet from my house.
i moved the game camera and a week ago got a picture of one that week.

and that anmal was bigger than my small dog of 45 pounds.

i have two dogs also and i thought it would keep them back. but that doesn't seem to work.

i was at another neighbors and saw a bear 10 feet from his house (we were standing outside) and his dog was face to face with the animal and the bear acted like the dog wasn't even there.

Me, if I was a coyote, I woulda gone to Mr Beef just north of the loop on Orleans, but I guess Quizno's will do.

Maybe Giordano's for some deep dish...

If he was really smart, he'd head over to Elmwood Park, go to Johnnie's, then hang out in the Forsert Preserve.

A good article on coyote social behavior:

Go to the homepage too. It is interesting reading.

I live NW of Chicago in the far suburbs (where the last few farm fields are turning into housing subdivisions), and we have quite a few coyotes here. We can hear their cries and I can often see their eyes glowing off in the distance with a spotlight. The only trouble they caused is a few years back they attacked my neighbor's lab who roamed free on the property (enclosed by a LARGE invisible fence) - probably a territory thing.

Hi kenk!!! Hate to get off topic, but a spend a great deal of time in your neck of the woods (Rockford, Belvidere, Poplar Grove, Lake-in-the-Hills, ...). Heading there this weekend as a matter of fact.

Hey Marcinek--

I just spotted a hippopotamus at a Buona Beef near here.

Sorry: turns out she was just wearing a gray suede coat.
