CPK EDC2

Conducting a business on a public forum can hurt feelings....its business conducted around spectators and your well earned fans (the ones who apologize for not ordering on a pre sale types). I am just a little thrown off by this process, But this is the Human Resource, customer service and for sale, area...but I don't know. I paid for a product and feel Ive been pushed to the side (no refund, in between sales, no communication)....but I don't know ....I have to read through public forum threads (through strangers) to find out where my money is

ES, you knew what you had paid up front for if you had taken the time to read through this:

Here is the order process:

I'm going to take full payment in advance and hold your money. While I think this is usually a bad policy, so I don't generally recommend it, I've been around a while, my shop is an incorporated business established in 2001, so I'm probably not going anywhere. I will ship your knife when it's finished. Once your order is confirmed there are no refunds, changes or cancellations. I will leave this preorder open for a while, once it has been open for a while or if it gets too big I'll close it. We are cutting chips on this project now, they'll start to finish up in about three months. They will ship as they're finished in the order that they are ordered in. As I'm building them, half the knives made will go to this pre-order, the other half will be sold in regular sales. This means you will see knives being sold while you're waiting for your knife.

When you place your order it will sit on the order thread for a day or more before we process it. In that time frame you can change your order. So, if you wake up and decide you want one instead of two, or you want micarta instead of G10 you can edit your post. Once Jo contacts you (you need email or PM "turned on" or send contact info to her) and you finalize your order it is finalized. Please don't add changes after-the-fact because it is this sort of thing that has made lists unmanageable in the past and is the reason I don't normally keep lists.

A very easy ay to contact them without airing dirty laundry was also clearly stated as so:

Jo will contact you to determine your payment preference. Options are check, cash, MO and paypal. You will also need to confirm where you want it shipped. This will be done by Jo the Machinist private message or email.

This list will be up for a couple days.

If, after a while, you don't hear from us and we don't hear from you, something is getting lost in the interwebs or spam filters. So if you haven't confirmed your order and received your invoice after a week or two you should contact Jo at carothers knives at gmail dought com.

Here ya go again if you decide to send Jo an email requesting whatever it is which will satisfy you apart from asking to jump ahead of peep in front of you:

I thought oscars were more of a whine and cheese type thing

I think that there is still some, albeit, sometimes rather harsh (and hilarious), reality to be had in Whine and Cheese. As for the Oscars, and Hollywood, I’m not so sure.:p Mike

I normally don’t get involved in these things, but I’m going to this time. I’m relatively new to CPK myself.
I feel there might be a misunderstanding about what CPK (and by extension, this subforum) is, what it wants to be and what it doesn’t want to be. Nathan and Jo have both explained their philosophy in several threads throughout the forum. But even without reading those, I think it should be quite apparent.
Most people are quite happy with it and understand that there is a process. My suggestion would be to think about it and decide whether CPK is for you - or not.
Last but not least, it should be pretty clear what a gentleman Nathan is from the way he handled this today.

You see, this is the kind of thing that makes me want to not do pre-orders. I don't want to do pre-orders. I never did. I wasn't having any problem simply building and selling knives. The problem was for other people who couldn't make the 3:00 sales becoming frustrated and requesting pre-orders. I did this because people asked me to.

We're a very small company. three people, less than 2,000 knives per year. The problem with taking orders and maintaining lists is keeping up with what everybody wants, dealing with changing whims and orders, people not having the money to complete the order once it was finished, and people simply being difficult to get hold of. It was a logistical nightmare when I was making 1 knife a week and it wasn't going to scale up. I am not a people-person and dealing with the people and the problems and the unexpected made it impossible for me to do. I am a machinist, this is a job shop, we are not Amazon. Making and selling knives is no problem, dealing with pre-orders is outside of our core competency (converting metal into things) and is a good way for a low margin small business to get sunk, which is why the only way I'm willing to do it is the simplest way possible.

So, dealing with this sort of thing is a confusing time-suck that detracts from our real business, which is making knives. So the ONLY way I'm willing to do it is this very simple process: tell me what you want, give me your money, I build what we agreed upon and I ship it to you once it's ready. No changes, no refunds, no bullshit. Other than that I DON'T WANT TO DO IT, I DON'T NEED THE DRAMA. So, I have tried to be VERY VERY CLEAR:

If you want to know where you are on the order, look at the order list and see where you are on it. That's where you are. "no communication" would be incorrect because we are putting updates on the sale thread as we ship, but yes I am not communicating individually. I'm machining, not replying to emails. I never signed up for that. You're not pushed to the side, you're in a list that is being filled. We shipped 12 today. In between sales was very clear from the start. I spelled that out as clear as possible. The reason is because I'm not willing to shelve my actual business model which is build knives over the week and sell them on Friday. It's been that way for years. If I stop for several months to complete a pre-order (that I didn't even want) then our regular Friday sales (which is how I prefer to sell my work) gets messed up. I'm not willing to do that, so I split it up where some of the work goes: to pre-orders and some goes to regular sales. As far as "no refund" that's to get rid of the day dreamers who order stuff they're not really sure of. If someone orders a knife from me, that's great I appreciate your business, I take your money, I build your knife and ship it to you when it's ready. There is no need for further discussion than that. Dealing with refunds is the same as dealing with other changes. I can't afford to get buried in all of that. I was very extremely clear in the pre-order and that's the end of it.

That said I'm willing to make an exception for you. If you would like a refund please send Jo an email we will process that tomorrow and that will be the end of it, I don't need this drama.

I get notified every time someone messages CPK through messenger/facebook and there's usually around 10 per day- just from facebook, can't imagine how many through the other platforms you can use to get at Jo/Nate. As a rule I don't read them, but sometimes just the first few words say it all. People are full of expectations, they often think they deserve someone's time and when they do have the expectation, they generally don't deserve the time.

And, to finish my contribution to this captivating conversation- I don't find troll behaviour entertaining. It's irritating, immature and stupid, and always should be called out and atonement sought. No atonement? Byeeee.

And, I think it sucks that you've more or less bullied Nate into breaking his policy. You don't deserve it, from my point of view, and I'd tell you to pack sand for the disrespect on display here. That pisses me off the most about this bs.

Good day, sir! lol

Just my 2 cents. Nate, Jo and Lorien: you keep doing exactly what you're doing. It makes sense (and hopefully cents).

I think one guy got frustrated and said some things that were inflammatory. Maybe some flames were fanned.

You can't please 100% of the people nowadays but you guys make a lot of people happy with not just your product but the way you actually do business. It's tip top.

I know my posts don't mean much in the big picture of things but I appreciate you guys, this subforum and especially - the tools.

(By "tools", I mean "knives")
