CPK Scale Options

Nathan and Jo found another burlap material that does work well with their process.

Once I finally kicked my ECAM addiction, my default selections on new purchases have been either Gray TeroTuf or OD Green Unbuffed Micarta (or both.) I think the recent addition of OD Green Terotuf is going to make my standard choice much simpler. I lucked out a couple weeks ago and got the last set available for the FK2 (according to @Jo the Machinist )

I hope to continue this theme down the road with a DEK1 in OD TT when they get into full production.

If you have ever wondered as to what CPK's TeroTuf scales look like with application of some Obenauf's LP, voila:

The ones on the left are Obenauf's LP treated unbuffed OD green for DEK1 and the ones on the right are for the Chopper models. TT soaks up more of the stuff than the micarta both because of the material and the surface area. I will let them air out for a couple of weeks to see how much oily residue will be felt after a fortnight.

I'm reeaally leaning towards making a set of scales for my pristine, 3V Shiv. Either that or buying a massive slab of Nichols damascus and having a buddy grind me a unique blade.

But my mind keeps coming back to the Shiv. It's a primo candidate - looks fantastic and a helluva tool, although I'll most likely make a badd-azz custom stand to display it. And Shivs don't seem to be losing their value, do they? I was gonna make my decision after Blade, but that idea got shot...twice. Help me make up my mind.

These are the grainiest ivory slabs I've ever run across and ivory is my jam. I'm dying to see what the grain looks like once the scales are contoured. The grain runs all the way through - front to back; top to bottom. My main hesitation in using the ivory is there will be a lot of waste of these killer slabs. Also, they might be a bit thin - I need to check. (I split them from one piece and lost some to the kerf).
Scales are .21" x 1.75" x 5".

End of slabs

I'd like to see those on a Shiv. I tend to get a little over the top with scales, so, yeah. Do it!

OK, I let these dry out indoors but out in the open since last Monday (roughly for 6 days now so I suppose that another day would not have mattered much but I did say 1 week experiment) and then took a microfiber cloth to them to rub and buff them by hand fast and furiously. The results are voila:

At first I was like, hmm?! but after testing the texture and the grip which not oily at all, I have no problem to slap these onto users. If I don't like the Obenauf's LP I can always take to soap and scrubbing but to dye them would've been a permanent procedure. I don't like deviating from the original CPK by much so if you decide to go unbuffed and then want to apply Obenauf's vs buffing there you have it ^
