CPKomplications (watches)

I wanted to revive this thread as I had a query for you all.

As I've stated before, I've never been a fancy watch guy. That said, I am beginning to travel a lot more for work, attending tech conferences/trade shows, giving presentations and such. I'm having to revise my wardrobe a bit and one of the items that I am looking at improving upon is a watch. I don't know anything about watches, and truth be told, I am not sure I want to plumb that particular rabbit hole. I figured I would reach out to you all for some recommendations.

I'm not rolling in Rolex dough, but I also don't necessarily want to settle for a Timex. I know I prefer watches on the larger side (I have a larger sized Apple watch but it looks tiny and I have a hard time operating it - I only wear it to track my fitness metrics). Something robust, yet classy, that won't look like unnecessary bling in a casual environment but won't look out of place when wearing a suit. Thanks all.

There are so many excellent choices it's really impossible to make a meaningful recommendation.

I always wore watches when I was younger but I stopped wearing watches in my late teens when I was learning to play the violin and started working around machine tools. Carried a pocket watch for a long time.

I started wearing wrist watches again and I can tell you that it is going to take a little while for you to determine your personal preferences. So I recommend not spending a lot of money yet and maybe finding stuff that's used so you can try out different watches for a few years until you figure out what it is that you like.

I like a Swiss or Japanese automatic watch. I'm not a big fan of the quartz watches.

I am partial to Mido. They use an ETA movement that provides a lot of bang for the buck. They're well made, their cosc certified chronometer watches are very accurate, they have a wide selection of different kinds of watches, and you're not paying some obscene brand premium, they're worth what they cost.

You're probably going to go through a few watches before you settle on something that's perfect for you.

I personally like a tool watch and the diver watches have a useful function for me because I'm frequently starting a process and walking away from it and I need to be able to time it. And the ability to see what time it is in the middle of the night by just holding the watch up to my face is nice because sitting up and looking at my phone wakes me up too much.

"Something robust, yet classy, that won't look like unnecessary bling in a casual environment but won't look out of place when wearing a suit" might be one of the "James Bond" watches like the Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster Professional. At least in my opinion.

Man this Tissot is pretty sweet

I've had an Omega Seamaster for decades, beautiful well made mechanical timepiece. It's too nice for me to wear at work, and up till 2 weeks ago I have always spent way too much time working. I have a few Seiko Prospex divers and a Citizen Promaster diver automatic and find they are really good quality for the price.

Almost twins ...

Been wearing this for a couple of months now. Feels like my forever watch, we'll see.

PS: hope you're getting better quickly, BDJ !

There are a lot of different flavors of the Seiko 5 watch that won't break the bank and would give you a chance to try different types of watches to determine your personal preference

They have an almost a cult following and it wouldn't be weird for a person with a Patek Philippe in their collection to also have a Seiko 5

This one is pretty old. It belonged to my father.

They're nothing fancy, but they are well regarded. It's unpretentious and cool. I don't wear this one because it's not a tool watch, but they do make tool watches.

In an alternate universe, that's probably the watch I'm wearing

I bought the Omega Seamaster, (in the post above), in celebration of being a few months out from my planned retirement.

This one was sent to me as an afterthought post retirement...and is the cheesiest watch I've ever owned. I keep it as a reminder of all that's wrong with the government...and why I was smart to get out when I did.

I haven't heard the word cheesy used in this context for a long while. It's perfect.

I "need" a > 100m watch and protected crown because I appear to be rough on my watches (something to do with the motorcycle, gloves, etc.).

Everytime I had an expensive quartz watch (gifts, etc.), the moment I had to change batteries (not myself, at a shop), the watch lost being water proof.

So that leaves me with automatic or solar watches. It's very nice not to have to adjust the watch every couple of weeks. So solar is perfect for me.

And the Citizen eco-drives just rock, great value ! And I'm a Ti fan, amazing how light the above watch is.

PS: my dad had a Seamaster for as long as I can remember. But that watch had "disappeared" when my sisters and I dealt with the inheritance last year :(

It is cheesy

It really is cheesy.

It is also staggeringly bad. It is a perfect demonstration of how the government can screw up anything, in new and creative ways.

It's possible (likely even) that the person making those choices wasn't even incompetent, just their hands were tied.

Fortunately, that person wasn't me.

(But the watch has served brilliantly as the canary in a coalmine. )

Thank you for all the recommendations and advice, fellas. It definitely gives me a fair bit to chew on. I'm seeing numbers anywhere from 3-500 bucks to mid-thousands to tens of thousands and even more. It's incredible to me that a watch could cost as much as what I paid for my house...

It makes sense though. Traditionally, women (or their men) would covet and/or possess fine jewelry. Watches have traditionally been a "guy" thing - it's their form of jewelry so why would the sky not be the limit in terms of their cost?

This resonates with me quite a bit, thank you for the thoughtful feedback. I wore a watch extensively in my youth, though growing up on a farm, I broke them all the time. I also took violin lessons for many years and would always take it off. I stopped wearing a watch when I worked in electrical construction - I was sticking my hands in all sorts of places where there was a good chance a watch would have gotten me stuck. I began wearing them again when I worked for the Sheriff's Office and it's been off and on for me ever since.

Once you get in the habit of checking your phone for the time, a watch seems unnecessary. I've become accustomed to a watch again though (the less time spent on my phone the better).

It looks like I have a whole different world to explore. I don't think I can stomach another collecting pursuit but having a nice piece or two wouldn't disappoint me.

I need to send the Deep Blue in to get cleaned again. Anyone know a better place than Saltzmans?

ed. One of the nice things about the autowinder vs. the Garmin I sometimes wear is, if my phone is confused about the time/time zone, the mechanical watch doesn't care. The Garmin is confused right along with the phone. I have tried to convince my wife that the power reserve hand is just as good as a step counter but she isn't buying it.

Before 'we all start', since rabbitholes were mentioned, i feel like the responsible thing to to is ask, 'are you sure?' I have all sorts of silly analogies. Instead, I'd like to remind you where you are. The possibilities are endless, up to full crazy, in all flavors. Look around, it's easy to see.

You, obviously, have means and intellect, seem pretty level. Due diligence, right now, I'm sure that's true. I'm telling you though... Professional looking for a nice watch, 'tell me about em.' Not a Rollie, can't afford it.
That's the danger zone.

Good luck. I've already made this mistake. You've been warned. 😁
