I wanted to revive this thread as I had a query for you all.
As I've stated before, I've never been a fancy watch guy. That said, I am beginning to travel a lot more for work, attending tech conferences/trade shows, giving presentations and such. I'm having to revise my wardrobe a bit and one of the items that I am looking at improving upon is a watch. I don't know anything about watches, and truth be told, I am not sure I want to plumb that particular rabbit hole. I figured I would reach out to you all for some recommendations.
I'm not rolling in Rolex dough, but I also don't necessarily want to settle for a Timex. I know I prefer watches on the larger side (I have a larger sized Apple watch but it looks tiny and I have a hard time operating it - I only wear it to track my fitness metrics). Something robust, yet classy, that won't look like unnecessary bling in a casual environment but won't look out of place when wearing a suit. Thanks all.
There are so many excellent choices it's really impossible to make a meaningful recommendation.
I always wore watches when I was younger but I stopped wearing watches in my late teens when I was learning to play the violin and started working around machine tools. Carried a pocket watch for a long time.
I started wearing wrist watches again and I can tell you that it is going to take a little while for you to determine your personal preferences. So I recommend not spending a lot of money yet and maybe finding stuff that's used so you can try out different watches for a few years until you figure out what it is that you like.
I like a Swiss or Japanese automatic watch. I'm not a big fan of the quartz watches.
I am partial to Mido. They use an ETA movement that provides a lot of bang for the buck. They're well made, their cosc certified chronometer watches are very accurate, they have a wide selection of different kinds of watches, and you're not paying some obscene brand premium, they're worth what they cost.
You're probably going to go through a few watches before you settle on something that's perfect for you.
I personally like a tool watch and the diver watches have a useful function for me because I'm frequently starting a process and walking away from it and I need to be able to time it. And the ability to see what time it is in the middle of the night by just holding the watch up to my face is nice because sitting up and looking at my phone wakes me up too much.
"Something robust, yet classy, that won't look like unnecessary bling in a casual environment but won't look out of place when wearing a suit" might be one of the "James Bond" watches like the Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster Professional. At least in my opinion.
