cpm 154 and small orders from crucible

I really do not think they are intentionally blowing you off, but it goes like this as soon as you get off the phone another guy is waiting to talk with them that goes on all day.

So I guess you're suggesting that their poor customer service is due to incompetence rather than outright rudeness? ;)
Either way, it doesn't speak highly of at least some of their sales staff.

No Chris I am not suggesting incompetence or rudeness, I tend to be a little understanding that "shit happens" when dealing with a corporation that supplies steel all over the world with thousands of accounts if it happens all the time that's another story then yes shit can company and move on.

I can only speak from my experience on the transactions I have had with the guys in the Texas office.....and its been great. But when I call these guys I intend to make a purchase not look for quotes all I need to know is it available and when will it ship!

One last thing it often goes over looked how much crucible has done for the custom knife market, they do care about every knife maker that calls, but like I said "Shit Happens"

I agree Spencer. Great post.

Sar i had every intention to make a purchase from them. as far as getting a quote i have never ordered metal from them so needed an idea of cost . I'm not going to just say sure send me 1 k worth of steel. I need to know what im paying for said items. Here is my take on it. I own a roofing company in Northern California. 95% plus of all my work is referal based. So i do have a business understanding of customer service. I understand also that a call may be missed or somethings will happen were a person does not get a call back, but after the second call to the same person yield me the same result that suggests to me that they dont want my business. I can think back over the last 13 years and guarantee that if any1 has called me twice in a matter of a week that they have always gotten a call back period. I will get the metal i need it just wont be through crucible.

I got what your saying Dakota and fully understand........it just seems rare for them to drop the ball, but hey they have to deal with the fallout. Scott is on the boards here maybe he will pop in and say hi.

I was ordering my stuff by calling the Charlotte NC office, then the rep there told me to call Houston for my blade steel orders. She said those folks there were more knowledgeable and carried the stuff I needed. I have been calling Houston ever since and always had my order squared away with one phone call. I asked for a product, they told me if they had it or not, eventually picked something, and it was on its way. I find it strange that you guys have had a problem talking to them, but of course I am not doubting your claims. It all depends on who you talk to sometimes no matter what you are trying to do when you communicate with outside agencies for stuff. Believe me, I know all about bad customer service in my current line of work. It sucks that you guys have a bad taste in your mouth about Crucible. BTW my orders were anywhere from $100 to $250.

Spencer, I was not window shopping, I was trying to place an order. I'm sure he's a busy guy and I wouldn't even have minded if he had just told me that he only accepted larger orders. But when the salesman takes my name and number, then never calls me back, I can only assume he's either lost my number or is not interested in taking my order. Either way, I'm still without the steel I want. After several days of not hearing back from the salesman, I called James Pop instead. He was happy to take my order and I got what I needed. I didn't think too much about the salesman from Crucible until I saw that Dakota was treated the exact same way.

Chuck, I've always had great service when I place orders from you, so I'm surprised that you'd defend Crucible's poor customer service (at least by this particular salesman).

I think that I am quite understanding when I'm shopping. I know that I'm a small fish in a big sea, so if someone would rather I shop somewhere else, I don't let it bother me. I'll just look until I find someone who wants my business. In this case it was James Pop, that's why I put in a plug for him. I like Crucible's products, so I buy them where I can. If you guys have good luck with Crucible, by all means purchase your steel directly from them. However, there's no need to get unpleasant with people who have had different luck trying to order from them.

I am fortunate to have a local Crucible sales office in Indianapolis (my home town).

They have always been very good about orders and service.

There is a fella in the Texas Crucible office, Scott Devanna (my apology if I spelled wrong..its after 10 p.m. and we are waiting for a call to go to the hospital to hopefully, see our son Bill and His Lady, Stacy, and our first Grandchild...calll darn it call!!!!).....

Chris, I was not defending poor customer service. The examples provided here are inexcusable. I was agreeing with Spencer that Scott Devanna is a tremendous asset to knifemakers. I get to talk to Scott a few times a year and he is always interested in hearing what steels knifemakers are requesting and reports of the steels performance. He is currently leading a push inside Crucible to have a special steel made for knifemakers.

My example of poor customer service is from a different steel company. I called at least twice a month for four years and never did get the steel. Two years after I stopped calling them a salesman from their company stopped me at a show and asked why I was not selling their steel!

Knifemaking is a very small community. The total amount of steel used by custom knifemakers is tiny compared to other steel consumers. I deal with steel companies whose attitudes towards custom knifemakers range from quaint to disdain. Because of my experiences I'm very thankful to have Scott and Crucible trying to help us.

Chuck, it seems that we are, in fact, on the same page.

As I mentioned, I like Crucible's products and will continue to buy them. I am appreciative that they take an interest in knifemaking and design steels for makers. I would never condemn the whole company just because one salesman didn't call me back. However, I did find somewhere else to buy their steel. I'm happy with their products and my vendor (Pop's), so there's really no problem.

Gentlemen,
There is no excuse for poor customer service. At this point I can only apologize and hope you do not think too poorly of Crucible. We are very interested in the custom knife maker and getting our steel in their hands. We do have several distributors we work with and they do a great job - several have been mentioned in this thread.

If you need help - knife blade steel or technical assistance please call and ask for me or you can talk to Rhonda, Tina or Amy. We are interested in you and your business

Thanks for listening.
