CPM 154 vs s30v

I couple months ago I bought a new SMF with CPM154 per the recommendation of YouTube reviewer jdavis882 (thank you) and I've been extremely impressed with how well it holds its edge and now it's probably my favorite steel for folders. I'm not saying its the best, just that it held its edge after HEAVY use better than the steel used in most of my other folders. I have an A.G Russell Acies 1 that uses ZDP-189 that also holds its edge incredibly well yet I haven't used that knife for any heavy duty cutting like the SMF so I'm not sure how it would preform under those conditions.

Best of luck!

Is the ZT200 CPM154 or 154CM? Should this be posted on the ZT forum?

I was never a big fan of S30V. Granted, I only had it on a couple of BM's, but to me it never seemed to get very sharp. It always felt sort of jagged. And once I did get it fairly sharp, it lost that initial sharpness and then just stayed sort of chippy feeling until I hit the stones again. I much, much prefer a steel I can strop back to a good edge as opposed to one that takes a real sharpening session to get the same effect. Chippy, somewhat sharp edges are worthless to me. I need sharp.

As for CPM 154, no experience with it, but if it's run as hard as y'all are saying, I'm not too interested. I imagine it would take a lot of effort to sharpen and not work at all on a strop at 62 HRC.

Give me some A2 or O1 or 1095 (heck, even well done 440C) anyday or these super steels.

CPM 154 isn't bad at all to sharpen.... Even at 62 HRC it's not bad.

The only one I have left in CPM 154 is a Custom Fillet knife, and that's at 60 HRC because the blade has to be flexible.

Really though CPM 154 is a dream to work with and maintain, holds an edge and easy to get that edge back.

Like it has been stated the ZT 0200 is 154CM but I wouldn't let that stop me from picking up this knife. There's absolutely nothing wrong with 154CM as there are SO many really good blade steels being used these days. Under normal EDC use I doubt you'll see a huge difference between most of the better steels.

I have a ZT200 and it is one heck of a knife. It wont be sold, thats for sure.

I'm working with some A2 now at 61 HRc. We'll see how it goes. There is a thread here somewhere that shows, with magnification, how harder steels are easier to sharpen given the same amount of work done with the softer steels. However, if you sharpen from the same amount of dulling, then they would take a little longer, but not enough to notice in my opinion. I've rebeveled and touched up CPM S60V with just some wet/dry sandpaper and the 204 Sharpmaker.
