so i was reading through the latest BLADE and happened across this article on CPM 154. seems that i remember it being a crucible variety, but i just checked their website and found not a trace. have they started marketing yet?

i havn't been lurking around here for a few weeks so i probably missed the official thread, but congrats Darrel Ralph and Michael Kanter. darrel, i really like the new gun hammer knife, the recurve *on the cover of* BLADE is pretty sweet. wish i could afford it....lol Michael, that D'Amico has just about become your trademark...looks great man, keep it up.

I have had some questions concerning the 154 series as well. Is the CPM 154CM from crucible different than the 154CM from Admiral Steel?

Bill

Hi Cigarman, April issue of "BLADE" has a good article on CPM 154 so I will quote from that. The interview is with Crucibles "Scott Devanna" so take it from there what I quote: Devanna & Crucible steel had a theory that,by recreating 154CM using the CPM process, not only would CPM 154 be easier for knifemakers to finish & polish to a high sheen, but it would also be tougher than 154CM,even though the elemental makeup of the two steels is identical. Another quote: Tests from our research facility in Pittsburgh show that CPM 154 is twice as tough as 154CM,Devanna notes " It suprised everybody. We knew it would improve toughness ,but we didnt know it would be that much". I cant type very well so I'll leave you with that.:)

I would also add that the 154CM from Admiral also comes from Crucible. It is also of note that the CPM 154CM is significantly more expensive than the standard 154CM. IMHO worth it if the claims are accurate.

It's my understanding that CPM154 contains a decent amount of Vanadium, while 154CM does not. Vanadium content of CPM154 is about what BG42 has, from what I've read.

RWL 34 also has a small amount of Vanadium and is a powder metal process steel.

154 CM was developed by Crucible for jet engine turbine fans to have good "red" hardness from the Mo content. They called it 440 Mod originally, I believe. ATS 34 was Hitachi's version.

CPM 154 is different, due to the Crucible powder metal process. The article did not admit that there was any V added to the mix, but Crucible has been secretive about composition of their steels in the past. They have not published any Nitrogen content figures for S30V yet, but it is widely known (rumored?) to be one of the things that makes it so good for a blade steel.

The major difference is that the CPM steels have carbides that are smaller andmore evenly distributed. This gives you better machinability better finish and toughness is better especially transverse.

It's a very small amount of vanadium, just enough to refine the grain. It is a small improvement in itself though.

It doesn't take much Vanadium to improve a blade steel, IMHO.

Thanks Alex

I have 2 more orders for those since that came out. They are pretty involved to make but I like the end result. Maybe I will do a tutorial on the bolsters and spacers some day.:D

Ordered some from Pops just today....he's got some as well....3/16" x 1.5" and 3/16" x 2". Other thicknesses expected to arrive soon!

I grabbed a couple of bars off Pop's table in Little Rock(yes, I did pay for it), but haven't tried it out yet.

what kind of cost is the stuff per bar if you dont mine me asking
butch

I paid $55 for a 3 ft bar of 3/16" thick x 1.5" wide piece. No shipping, as I got it from Pop's at the Little Rock show.

To be more to the point - how much more does the CPM cost and is it worth it to gain the toughness. easier to work etc ??

I'll let you know about the ease of working soon, as I plan on grinding a small blade out, maybe tonight.
