Reading through the new Blade issue, I noteiced mention of Tom mayo using CPM 154V? In parenthesis it said that it was a version with added vanadium.

Anybody else using this version of 154 and how does it compare to standard CPM 154?

Man that would be cool. A bit of V is what CPM 154 has been needing.

You pretty much can't get VG10 in this country. A lot of folks don't like S30V because it is difficult to sharpen and has mediocre edge stability. 154 and ATS34 are our "premium" stainless steels, but VG10 has always been "a little bit better", and that is probably because of the vanadium it has. I think 154 with V in it would be great.

I wonder how the heck he got some of that? CPM...has to be a Crucible steel. Sounds like a custom run, or maybe they're just talking about VG10 and think they are too good to say the name. :)

All CPM154 has vanadium. They have been increasing the amount with each melt. If I remember correctly the last batch had .4%. I don't know the amount newest melt has.

I got this information directly from Scott Devanna.

I'm not doubting what you're saying. But why don't they mention that in their literature? It is listed as having 1.05% carbon, 14.00% Chromium and 4.00% Molybdenum. Adding Vanadium is probably a wonderful idea (though I'd expect they'd need to reduce other elements and/or change the austenitizing temperature or something), but why in the world don't they mention it?

You'd think a company that doesn't publicize their product improvements would go bankrupt (sorry, is it too soon to joke about that?)

If CPM 154 contained Vanadium, I wonder why they don't list it?

The official answer from Crucible (Ed) is that they do not deliberately add any Vanadium to CPM 154. I have a cert that shows the presence of a small amount of vanadium. I can dig it up. but I think it was just shy of .2% - enough to refine but not a significant carbide producer.

The steel simply kicks ass. Has anyone else got a firm date on the next melt? We are running quite low.

That literature from 07 does not mention vanadium. Anyhow besides that I wonder what the prices are going to be like when ordering directly from Crucible. Hopefully they do not go up too much.

You are right, they do not mention Vanadium. The certs do show it. You won't be buying it from crucible. You will either be using Crucible Service centers (Not owned by Crucible) or Niagara Specialty metals. I presume you will aslo be able to get it from Admiral and others as well.

Vanadium in CPM154 is simply a residual - not purposely added but does have some. The idea of adding more sounds good and we(Niagara/Crucible Inds.) will look into it. If Mr. Bybee says I told him we were adding some Vanadium I would say he is correct and i was in error. I am not sure where Mr. Mayo got the Name CPM154V but once again I would say I screwed up and gave him wrong info...........I am getting old and losing it - sorry. But then again - so is Mayo but I still luv him.

CPM154 will be available through Niagara Specialty Metals in mid to late January and I am 99% sure I have got this correct. if any of you want to discuss this further contact me. Sorry for any confusion here and I take complete responsibility.

Thanks, that's what I thought .
Additions of .20-.30 are added to steel for grain refinement , anything more will be for carbides. Having both S30V and CPM154 knives ,I wouldn't think any more than 1.00% V addition would be good. More than that and you'd get the S30V problem for you makers - difficult to get a high polish.CPM154 is very nice stuff !!

Will you be at the same number that you were at when it was Crucible Service Center?
