It may just be me, but there seem to be a few of our regulars who express a definite preference for either BG-42 or S30V for their Buck 110 blades.

So I'm thinkin' . . . we need to settle which is better, once and for all.

Should we all meet somewhere with our Buck 110s and fight it out like the Newsman gang war in "Anchor Man"?

Perhaps a "cut off" is in order? Some kind of cutting and slicing competition?

Or maybe something along the lines of "the dozens," where two people compete at insulting each other, but for us it would be competing as to why our preferred blade steel is better?

All Buck steel is great :D
Paul Bos sees to it! I think all the collectors should buy one of each steel type, test it for themselves and post their results.
I however will not be able to do that :D
I can only use the 420HC, 440, and 425 steels... The rest are too nice to scratch up, ( I am weak I know :D)
Good luck I will watch for the results...

Should also add, ATS-34 and 154CM/CPM, and 420HC and 440 and 425

To me its kind of a moot point. They are all good. Also they are all good in their own respective areas... As long as its sharp and affordable I will use it.
I dont mind sharpening my 420HC...

What do you want it to do or not do better?
Sharpenability?
Edge retention?
Corrosion resistance?
Price?
Chip-break?

Well, all I can comment on is 440, 425, 420, and S30V for a 110. Just not going to use one of the custom stag BG42's for deer processing. So far, the S30V holds the edge longer. Keeps me from having to either stop and sharpen or spend time time at night in camp sharpening. I would have to carry 4 or 5 420 110's to equal what I have done with the one S30V.

Looking forward to trying the new 154 and still want a user BG42, or D2.

If you keep putting info like this up on BF Pack rat I may need to upgrade my Vanguard/zippers. I may even have to use  my cabelas 110 AG...

Gonna convert you to a clip user yet! :D

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed using the vanguard AFTER I got the animal skinned. Another thing that a lot of folks miss.... Hold a 110 up to a Vanguard. Actual cutting edge of the vanguard is not more n a quarter inch over the 110.

Whew... I think we have had this conversation already  :D

I think so tooo LOL
I like the 110! I hope I can use it this deer season, along with my custom from Scott, and my vanguard and... Boy I hope there is a lot of deer this year. :D

Also Pack rat I meant more to converting me to the S30V!
I already like using the 110 on waterfowl! Just never tried one on a deer yet!
Not many deer in these here parts, dont believe all the huntin magazines.:D

well to put my 2 bits in and this is jest my humbulger onion...
i Like realy like s30v !!!! want more of it hal-o-u-ya!!!
BG 42 = s30v on edge hold or even + a hair but not as resistant to croson...
i would rather have 420 or 440 or any thing but ats 34 with usa on it...
give it to me an i wont keep it.. i will sell it ...
and that is my rant...
rhino -" Perhaps a "cut off" is in order? Some kind of cutting and slicing competition?"

sounds like you now have to go to the 2008 club meet to be in
charge of said testing
you preposed it so you have to do it
to prevent all of us from choping
on the door trim at the buck factory !!!! ;)
you asked for it , you got it! hee hee :p

heh! I'm not involved in this! I'm one of those pesky "Hey, let's you and him fight!" types who stirs the pot, then steps back to watch the fireworks. :D

For those who may be taking this a bit too seriously, I hoped my examples would show I was having fun here. Of course, if you really do want to have a big Buck 110 knife fight, I'm sure something could be arranged! I will be at an extremely remote location when it occurs, though.

We can't risk a "cut off," because it's entirely possible someone with an plain jane 420HC blade on his 110 could actually win. Then where would we all be? We'd have to stop sneering at 420HC or at least feeling sympathetic toward those who use it! That situation is intolerable! We can't risk damaging our knife-egos!

Maybe we could have a three-way Celebrity Buck 110 Death Match among an Alaskan Guide 110 in S30V, a Bass Pro 110 in 154CM, and a Custom Shoppe 110 in BG-42. We'd put the three knives in the ring and watch them go at it. Of course, it may take some time for them to evolve into animate life forms that could actually move much less fight, but I'm patient.

CPM 3V
CPM S30V
BG 42
D2
154 or ATS 34
My favorite steels top to bottem, 3v only has 7& chrome so it does require some care to prevent rust but far more resistant than carbon steel. Very tough steel that takes a better edge than any of the rest. Due to its toughness and wear resistance I sharpen it at 12 to 15 degrees and it holds very well.
I am a little dissapointed in s30v in its edge holding ability butt if stain resistance is a primary concern, Thats my first choice.
D2 at 13% chrome is close enough for me to call it stainless, It is not as hard to sharpen as many say if you use diamonds. I like to put a course 220 edge on it first, then go to a fine 1200 lightly just want to knock off the high spots, I do not like a polished edge on D2. I sharpen it to about 20 deg.
154 and ATS 34 are virtually the same steel, I do not use them much anymore, But if I wanted stainless with a mirror finish, That would be my choice.

...Leon...Is that because it tends to react to the polishing compounds better???...

It has to do with the carbide structure of the metal. S30 v & D2 will not polish to a nice mirror finish.

I do not etch or ingrave so I am not the best person to answer that question. From what I have read etching should not be any problem. I think ingraving on any of these steels would be a challenge. I mill my name in the blade with a small ball mill and then etch the depression with ferric acid. See Photo

Hey Rhinoplasty...
Don't sweat the small stuff.
I haven't been around here too long but I sense this is a great bunch of peace niks when it comes to their brethren...as am I. Speaking for myself, I'd prefer sitting at a bar yakking about the steel and, at worst, carve "MK SDPD, Ret." on the bar.

But, if there is a drunken "show down", I will be there with my 300,000 watt "pager" to stun the 110 BG-42 outta someone that gets outta line of the rules that will be made up on the fly and claim "dibs" in the chaos. That is not "stealing" as I look at it as my public service by "confiscating" the 110 BG-42 for the safety of the indvidual and the larger group.

Then, I could compare against my S30V and the recently aquired BG-42 at my leisure. Just jabbering as I know that won't happen with this bunch of gentlemen...I think most of us are over the crazy when drunk days.

If there is a formally scheduled event, Dave and I will wear nothing but our Speedos to show we are un-armed and can't plant a sharpened unit for the final test and judging at the end of the event.

The jury will always be out on the steel...but that's what makes this place fun. Everyone has an opinion. As for me, I like the ATS-34 Bos on my 298GY. But, I'm not a metalurgist or knowledeable when it comes to knives like the other guys here. They are as old as dirt in their experience and intelligence regarding the characteristics of blade steels. I have yet to grab the pebble from the hand.

So, get your undies outta bunch and have fun. It's all good. ;)
Whilred Peas...

thanks leon
i was just wondering if the makers are switching to these newer steels if the etchings and engravings would be less common but i suppose not and maybe they can become even more extravagent and eloborate i guess time will tell
but some of the laser enhanced stuff is already pretty darned amazing
that knife of yours is a real nice looker that burlwood is nice out of the ones i have burl is among my favourites thanks for the pic

goose id like to have one of them pagers , but if you and dave show up in speedos you will probably be shunned :D
