CQC7 Tanto vs ZT 700

I'm in the market for a new EDC tanto.

Initially, I was considering the Benchmade Nimravus Cub Tanto, but even though it's really light and relatively small, I think a folder might be a better option.

So, Emerson CQC7B or the ZT 700?

A gun beats a knife every day for SD. A folder is pretty useless for SD. I can do more damage with a solid boot than with a knife.

Gun this, gun that. "You can't use a knife for self defense without training!!" Seriously? People are becoming too reliant on guns to get them out of jambs. I do agree that a gun is a quicker deterrent, but so many people act as if a knife is totally useless, or what's more, that you can't carry both. It isn't an either/or question, really. People just like to parrot what they've heard. It's kind of nonsensical to carry both a fixed and a folder for any kind of self defense, however. If you can't get to a fixed blade "fast enough", what makes you think you'll have time to pull out a folder, flick it open, and then get a good grip before using? If you don't have an option for a gun, your best bet is something non lethal but damaging. I say this not because you couldn't defend yourself with a knife, but because courts frown upon that pretty harshly.

Do some research, or better yet, actually test this out yourself. A pocket knife is not enough blade to pose a threat of much more than flesh wounds. If the attacker was deterred by a small blade then moderate hand to hand training would have also worked. If you are going to attack someone, you will have either a large knife (kitchen knife or otherwise large) or a gun. A knife will do nothing against a gun unless you are within arms reach.

When everybody says the same thing, my bet is that there is likely something to what everyone is saying.

Edit: I apologize if my post feels caustic in nature. You did overreact a bit, but I usually don't attack in response (unless it is allowed).

well while I agree that a knife isn't the best option I still carry one because Im not able to carry a gun or something like a baton but I am aloud a knife and its not strictly defensive but it is capable personally I like the cqc-7 a lot and I carry one almost every day

I've seen this comment a lot. I appreciate "practical" advice, but sometimes I think posters here need to see where the person asking the question is located (assuming location is listed) before responding. I'm not from the US. I don't have to worry about a gun over here. Except for vacations there, the odds of me ever coming face to face with a civilian who owns a gun are next to none.

Flesh wounds will sufficiently even the odds for me to escape a fight against someone who outweighs me and has greater reach. If the guy has to limp after me, I can escape. If the guy is bleeding out, I can escape.

Not about being unable to get a fixed blade out fast enough, but rather being in a position where I can't reach my fixed blade to begin with; e.g., being tackled against a wall.

Furthermore, I'm an Orthodox Jew and I'm often wearing clothing -- somewhat resembling an overcoat -- where it's not possible to wear a fixed blade outside. That's what the folder is for.

Yep, extenuating circumstances and all. Thank you for clarifying. See what I mean by people parroting what others say? My suggestion is to go folder with a non lethal primary like a tazer, if you think that fixed blade will be trapped because of your type of clothing. Folders, stun guns, pepper spray, kubotans, and batons/blackjacks are all relatively small, lightweight items that you can carry every day. In combination if you choose. Stun guns and spray especially will both buy you plenty of time to run, counterattack. ..whatever you plan on doing. Anyway to answer your original question, the CQC7 is made for rapid deployment and has a single bevel so you can sharpen it quickly, but is just so so as a utility knife. The ZT is going to deploy fast too, but you're going to have to change your grip as it deploys. Bear in mind that the ZT has better steel and is a bit bigger/more aggressive.

A couple years ago here a UofR student defended his life successfully with a 3" folder that appeared to be a CS prod when they showed it in the paper. The judge ruled he did what any reasonable person would do in that situation when getting your ass beat to a pulp. Mind set is a bigger factor when using a blade. The victim even told the police he carried the knife for s.d. So go with what feels comfortable in your hand. The 7 was made for it so get it. keepem sharp

Oddly enough, it's cheaper.

There is a certain factor to the CQC7 being an Emerson. Apparently his knives are designed specifically for SD/CQC, hence the name. They're made a bit softer to sharpen easier and faster, they're roughly made by comparison but pretty beasty. The ZT is gonna be better looking and smoother, but that wave pretty comes in first place. Personally I'd recommend the Roadhouse. Somewhat tanto style, beefier, just seems like a better contender IMO.

If I had to choose for SD I would get the Emerson. For utility, the 0700 all the way as you just get more knife for the money.

The Hogue EX-02 tanto is a very sturdy and quick to deploy knife. It is a flipper or you can get it with thumb studs. The knife is a little heavy, but built like a tank.

The zt 0700 is a great flipper and its damn fast and smooth.
