A gun beats a knife every day for SD. A folder is pretty useless for SD. I can do more damage with a solid boot than with a knife.
Oh really?

Do some research, or better yet, actually test this out yourself. A pocket knife is not enough blade to pose a threat of much more than flesh wounds. If the attacker was deterred by a small blade then moderate hand to hand training would have also worked. If you are going to attack someone, you will have either a large knife (kitchen knife or otherwise large) or a gun. A knife will do nothing against a gun unless you are within arms reach.
When everybody says the same thing, my bet is that there is likely something to what everyone is saying.
Edit: I apologize if my post feels caustic in nature. You did overreact a bit, but I usually don't attack in response (unless it is allowed).
While I agree that a knife is not the best go-to SD choice, the reality is that pocket knives are pretty much all that a lot of us are allowed to carry on the regular when considering laws. Almost impossible to CC a firearm here, can't carry a baton, etc...
How exactly do you suggest the OP test out a live knife and its effects on another person?
If you understand application of the blade along with basic anatomy, there are multiple incredibly painful and/or debilitating points or pathways that can be targeted if need be. An incredible amount of damage can be dealt with even a 2" pocket knife.
Maybe you should reconsider your research avenues

If two people are wielding blades and at long range, staying (just) outside of contact, a lengthier blade might make a difference in reaching your target. Maybe not. Once the distance is closed, you're both in the pocket.
If we are talking close range, both a shorter and longer blade are already within contact range and it becomes a different game of technique-- or even just wild prison-style stab/slashing... which has happened enough that we should realize by now that without training, this works.
On the note of an attacker being deterred by a showing of steel, the psychological shift when facing a person brandishing a blade is undoubtedly different than somebody displaying their fists or hands regardless of their style/system. That's just how it is.
To deter somebody with empty hand is to already be making contact.
Pulling a knife ramps up the legal and mortal issues tenfold.
IMO, never attempt to deter an attacker by pulling a knife unless you actually intend on using it.
BTW, High King, between the two, I'd go CQC-7. Love ZT, but that one's just not for me.
