While I am more of a bourbon person than a scotch person, I picked up a bottle of Cragganmore 12 Year scotch today. A friend suggested it, even knowing that I am more of a bourbon person. Anyway, I asked my LSAS (Local Spirits Acquisition Specialist) to let me know when some came in, and that day was yesterday. I picked it up this morning.

Is anyone here familiar with this particular scotch?

Ken,

I'm not familiar with it but if you send it to me I will be and can report back. :D

Well, I may need to do the reporting back about this particular specimen...

The last time I posted a link to a good deal for some spirits, I received an infraction. :thumbdn:

That's a good one; very complex. I hope you'll like it!

I drank a whole bottle once on a fishing trip...I have good memories of this

I dunno. The fact that you drank a whole bottle and still had memories may not actually speak too highly of this scotch. ;)

I hope you like it. It tasted too light and a bit fruity for me. My "go to" scotch is 12 year The Macallan. I found the Cragganmore a little wimpy for scotch.

Let us know how it is Ken, I've still not had a chance to grab a bottle of the "Rebel Yell!" I've noticed the Cragganmore around bottle shops, never tried it myself.

I put a pretty good dent in the Rebel Yell bottle this evening, which means that the Cragganmore will be opened soon, perhaps as early as Sunday.

I plan to go out tomorrow and purchase a bottle of bourbon.
It will be my first time (bourbon virgin).
I want to start off inexpensive so I'm gonna check out

What say you?

If you're thinking about Maker's Mark, you might as well go for their latest, meaning Maker's 46.

Knob Creek is good.

A good "starter" bourbon is Wild Turkey 101. I often open a bottle simply because it is good stuff.

Thank you for the advise Lunde. I appreciate it.
I will certainly keep it in mind while I'm looking tomorrow.
I live in Northern BC, Canada so availability is going to be an issue.
I will let you all know what I get tomorrow and my thoughts.

I've got 4 belts under my belt this evening and I give this post a +1 +1 +1

 :D

That was in a week time :)

I'd buy it again if they're was not so many scotch I didn't try

I say both of those are quite good.

Also, try Buffalo Trace. It is very good, and also quite mild compared to some. Good starter bourbon.

You could always start at or near the top:

I bought two of these last December, shortly after they were released. They are priced between $350 and $400, and are still available. I have #303, and my dad had #261 (1200 were made).

I am saving mine for a special occasion, such as when one or both of my attending-college sons graduate. I also have a bottle of the standard ($200 to $250) ORVW 23 Year bourbon, so I can celebrate both occasions in style.

Anyway, about the one I bought for my dad. When I visited in July, he told me that I should take it back to California, because he would probably never open it. Sure, I could have taken it back with me very easily, because I drove. But, it was a gift for my dad. I solved the problem right then and there by opening it. (I arrived on the 4th.) The photo below was taken on July 7th:

Here is what it looked like five days later, on the 12th:

My dad has since polished it off, probably a couple days after I left, but he now has a nice decanter (I was informed that my mom claimed it), and two nice crystal "spirits" glasses to enjoy.

lunde,

What is your opinion of the Crown Royal Black? I've yet to try it.

Ken, Cragganmore is pretty good stuff. Definitely one of the easier drinking single malts.

It is a Speyside malt, so it does have less of the peaty/smokey taste, and a lighter/shorter finish than an Oban or other Highland malt.

Enjoy
