Crappy Kershaw Breaks tip!?!

This thread has really gone a bit nuts.
I have personal experience with sending a knife to Kershaw for repair.
They will treat you right.
My problem was my fault 100%, and they replace the blade for a Scallion for me.
Give them a chance.

With a KIA representative like this-it's a wonder how they stay in business! :D J/K!!
A little common sense goes a long way;).Like Thomas said knife tips don't just fall off and in my over half a century using them it's never happened to me.:D

The box itself didn't break the tip. It was what was inside of the box. I snagged and when he went to remove the knife it snapped the tip. Point is the tip shouldnt have snapped. My guess is a crappy heat treat. By the way Thomas, it DID break off with a normal cutting task! There was no prying involved. I will never buy another kershaw again. Partly because of the knife, and partly because of your ignorance!

Wow.. You really know how to make friends. The fact that you won't buy any more Kershaws will be devastating to the company. I'm sure they will be closing the doors soon because of it.

If you took the time to research, you would find countless times Thomas has done things for people, that is far and above what anyone could expect a company to do.
However, with your attitude, I doubt you will be on that list

Just a hypothetical, here - the "snag" could have been the blade getting wedged, a little torque in efforts to remove it and voila- broken tip.

Ya, but the title of his thread really set the tone for this one. It reeks of stupidity and trolling

Bingo!

you (zz) have acted like a complete dick and thomas continues to treat you politely.... I bent the tip on my $20 kershaw and only because i dropped it on a rock, I DROPPED IT ON A ROCK, thats my fault entirely, it would have bent/broken the tip on a strider or hinderer. Kershaw's customer service is outstanding and for you to insult kershaw like this is absurd, get over yourself, they dont live and die by your stupidity, and by continuing to complain your only digging yourself a deeper hole.

Talk about the issues, not the people. No more insults in this thread.

I'm a bit confused as to how much of the tip actually broke off. Was it a significant amount or just a really small chip? I've chipped off the tip of several knives including one Kershaw, I believe it was the first version of the Junkyard Dog. On these, I simply took a little while to re-profile the tip on a water stone.

As far as I know 8cr13mov is quite close to Aus8 which doesn't hold an edge as well as say s30v but is tougher and doesn't chip or break as easy
(please correct me if I'm wrong)

These blade steels generally only break or chip with extreme abuse (at least in my case) like dropping it on concrete, getting it snagged and twisting ... things like that.

Also, I dont know what was in the box but as you know, contents inside boxes are usually protected with polystyrene, a mold to hold the contents in place or bubble wrap.
If so and the OP's dad was just cutting the box open around the surface there's no chance in hell that blade tip could have snapped (maybe dull if he went over a staple).

Being an IT tech I've opened boxes of all shapes and sizes with various IT contents using various knives with similar blade steels often every week.
Going on 8 years and I never broke a tip once

Heck, I've even used my leatherman knife tip to start pilot holes in wooden desks for screws. Got dull over time but never chipped or snapped

Think about it. To get the tip snagged on what ever was inside, the OP's dad had to have stabbed the blade into the box before cutting it open, or cut and forcefully push the tip right in.
With the utmost respect this in itself is a bit careless, as you stand a good chance of damaging, cutting or scratching the contents inside.

Then once snagged the blade tip would only break if twisted free with force

Whether intentional or accidental the tip did break from abuse

If the box's contents were not covered with protective covering then the fault is also on the people who packaged the box and it contents, not Kershaw

Thomas with respect, there is nothing you need to apologize for

In honor of this thread i am carrying two kershaws today. Star Key g10 ats34 and Skyline wally world version.

Bet ya the tip wouldn't have snapped if the knife was made in USA.
I don't buy knives with thin tips because they break off.

Seriously ? It's statements like this, that usually keep me out of "General"... Because this thread is in General, and it would drift from the original "issue", I can't give you the response your statement deserves.

I will however say, if you use a knife as it was designed, not as a pry bar or a screwdriver, you will probably find you will be less apt to break a tip. Even a thin one.

Somehow the tips on my Skylines and the tip on my wife's leek have all survived all are thin. What's more the tip on my chill is still all there and I've beat on that made in China knife to no end.

The facts are that we don't have any factual evidence to make a conclusion one way or the other. The thread has now degenerated into a 'he said, he said' and serves no useful purpose other than to generate animosity. Time for a lock-down, no?

I would agree. The OP's thread title should have been enough imho.

I have Kershaw Bear Hunter II.
I wonder if anyone can tell me how to close it ?
I really like the knife, but the lock is so tight that it won't close.

I had the same problem with a Gerber Yari years ago, but it did pass the "Spine whack" test well.

All you need is a hacksaw, a drill, some bolts, and a door hinge....

:D
