Creating a dugout canoe. Lots of nice tools and skill here.

These guys are using Elm for their handles! Either they're making a statement or they found a reliable local source for it. Elm was once a common wood but DED has knocked the stuffing out of the availability. Perhaps it's a little different in the Baltics or eastern Europe.
I have heard that we also have DED but I know of some ornamental trees growing in cities that appear to be healthy. It very well could be that these are hybrids though. The Siberian elm has naturalized very well here. In some of the more fertile river valleys there are trees that are said to be hybrids. This appears to be true.
Most of these trees are not worth cutting with a good one now and then. Just a huge variation in quality.

.

BTW, what is the DED? Looked it up, cant find it anywhere?
Seeing as you're located in the Netherlands (which contains Province of Holland) it may well be that DED "Dutch Elm Disease" is filtered from website inquiries over your way by overzealous officials. Origins of DED (an elm-lethal fungus) are unknown but it was first discovered and described by a Dutch scientist. Bummer about the tag the disease received after that.
