Broomhead, I'm no expert, but I believe it is for a lanyard that goes around the wrist. If I've used it properly, it's seems to provide an anchor point so you push down against the tension created between it and the spine of the blade during the forward swing of the chopping action. It is said to make things safer if the blade glances off, misses, or goes straight through without the expected resistance.Quick question, What is the purpose of the hole at the spine of the ricasso?
