CRK press release on S30V!!!

Might haveta hold off before purchasing any more CRK's so that I can get my hands on the new stuff!

Thanks, CRK, for continually staying ahead of the pack in regard to materials and all else for that matter!

Professor.

What are the specs on the S30V that Chris is using? What is hardness is he treating it at?

Well, I for one, have the cash in hand, waiting for a regular large Sebenza. From what I gather, reading through some of the recent posts, the price--list will be $345, just like the BG-42 large Sebenzas. There is also a thread authored by Cliff Stamp pertaining to S30V out there in the Review section. Interesting reading.
Way to go CRK!
Barry H.

Thanks CRK :) For keeping up, or as professor said for continually staying ahead of the pack :)

Could you please guys provide HRC used in new Sebenzas?

I wonder if they're going to offer a "blade replacement" program. . . ;)

I have 1 sebbie that has no milage and 2 with extremely high milage !

I wonder if they're going to offer a "blade replacement" program. . .

I called CRK yesterday afternoon to ask that exact question, and here is what I was told -

$105 to have a new blade put on. Turnaround time may vary depending on which model is having the blade replaced. I was told that my small Classic, if sent in now, would probably come back to me in a month.

Hope that helps!

Matthew

This is flipping great news! Hmmm, I feel a replacement blade is needed for my N6 classic;) .

Just need the cash first...:(

Way to go CRK!

What was initially coined in humor. . .now becomes a distinct possibility ! :D

But. . .if the BG-42 blade is swapped with a S30V ~ do you get to also keep the BG-42 blade ?

Hmmmmmmmm. . .inquiring minds want to know. lol

That's an interesting question :) I've called yesterday too, so I can only comfirm whatever you said, I guess I'll have to call back.

S30V is a great steel, but so is BG42. I hope that everyone that has a CRK knife made from BG42 does not now think that their knives are not as good as the new ones that will be coming.

I'm making arrangements to have my small wood inlay done ASAP.

Good news for buyers, bad news for sellers though, I think the price will fall on the resale of BG-42 sebs. Personally I don't mind because I'm usually both ;) :D

I'm planing on replacement, however not because I think BG-42 is bad. Those few months I've been using it, I'm really satisfied with it, along with the rest of my BG-42 blades. However, there's always a room for improvement snd S30V seems to be the improvement ;) Why not to have it?

P.S. I have 3 customs on order in BG-42, yet S30V is very interesting too :)

I'm really looking forward to getting a new large classic with the new steel. I think very highly of the BG-42 that Chris uses, I think out of all the other blade steels that I have, I like this one the best. So I can't wait to see just how good the new steel is going to be:D :D.

As Chris states in the announcement, and in person, there is a small gain and not a leap. The added value will come with a slightly tougher to sharpen blade so there is a trade of sorts. As far as values there should not be much of a fall,The second hand new steels should sell a bit higher than the older ones, but for most it should not be much of an issue. I think the demand for the bg-42 will be there after everyone realizes that the gains are not that dramatic and we have been and will be well served by the old,and the new. There will be and are those to whom have a "comfort" with the charecteristics of the bg-42 and those who will always want or need the latest and greatest. Will I personally get rid of my bg-42's for the new- I doubt that I will replace them. I will pick up the new steel as I want CRK's I don't personally have now, probably one or two to "test". In all reality my bg -42's have served me well as they have most of us. ;)

IMO, the news of the new steel does not diminsh the value of Sebbies with BG-42. Sure, the new steel will be nice, but BG-42 is no slouch either, especially considering most other higher end factory blades are either ATS34 or 154CM.

I'm not sure if I understand??? I read these post like CRK is the first knife maker to come out with S30V? Aren't there other knife makers already using S30V? Or is there a different grades of S30V..I'm not real clear on the different metals and how they work or grade. Somebody did ask about the HRC of the S30V that is being used, have we seen any information on that? And is the HRC higher or lower on bg42 compared with S30V or does that very from steel to steel? Just trying to learn more sorry for so many questions...

CRK is the first production knife maker to use this steel. Only a relative few custom makers have used the steel so far.
