Hey hummer784 -- just wanted you to know that I carried an M16-14 for about 18 months. I love the knife. I have a lot of CRKT knives, which I like a lot.
However, the only blade I own that has had problems with corrosion is the M16 AUS8 blade. I'm sure I gave it more sweat to deal with than any of my other knives, but early on, before I lost my MarineCloth, I was getting spotting in winter.
My CRKT KFF has a sort of bead blasted blade, but it is AUS6, not 8. Carried it a couple months. Not a single spot.
Since you're new, I can tell you that you "got off" easy. Had you used the name of at least one other maker of knife, you'd have been descended upon by an angry horde of supporters of that company, and flamed badly. I strongly suggest you not make such statements in any of the manufacturers forums. Things can get a bit rough.
It is impossible to tell, not knowing all the particulars your knife was subjected to, but there are a couple other stainless steels on the market that might well not have shown any rust, given the same circumstances. I suggest you use the search feature to look up threads about the performance of the various steels. All of them have different chemical makeups. There are a # of steel composition charts on the internet. One is to be found on Spyderco's home site.
Hang around, and enjoy yourself, and learn!
