CRKT is ****!

Hey hummer784 -- just wanted you to know that I carried an M16-14 for about 18 months. I love the knife. I have a lot of CRKT knives, which I like a lot.

However, the only blade I own that has had problems with corrosion is the M16 AUS8 blade. I'm sure I gave it more sweat to deal with than any of my other knives, but early on, before I lost my MarineCloth, I was getting spotting in winter.

My CRKT KFF has a sort of bead blasted blade, but it is AUS6, not 8. Carried it a couple months. Not a single spot.

Since you're new, I can tell you that you "got off" easy. Had you used the name of at least one other maker of knife, you'd have been descended upon by an angry horde of supporters of that company, and flamed badly. I strongly suggest you not make such statements in any of the manufacturers forums. Things can get a bit rough.

It is impossible to tell, not knowing all the particulars your knife was subjected to, but there are a couple other stainless steels on the market that might well not have shown any rust, given the same circumstances. I suggest you use the search feature to look up threads about the performance of the various steels. All of them have different chemical makeups. There are a # of steel composition charts on the internet. One is to be found on Spyderco's home site.

Hang around, and enjoy yourself, and learn!

To focus more on the positive, the M16-03 was an outstanding choice on your part. It's my first or second favorite tactical type carry folder depending on the mood (may drop to third after the NY Custom Knife Show).

Maybe **** stands for Nice... or Good.... or Wonderful.. (no that wouldnt fit...

maybe next time he could give us a clue, kinda like a crossword puzzle...

I want to clarify this. I took off my jeans and left the knife clipped in to the waist band of my jeans; then went swimming. I then got out of dried off and put my jeans back on. The knife never went into the water. When I noticed the rust it was dark, and late at night; I wiped it off and went to bed thinking it would go away. It has only got worse. Sorry for the confusion.

I have many crkt products. Most of the bead blast
models have the same problem. I used the Tuff cloth
every day, sometimes may times a day. I took my dremel
tool with the buffing wheel and some white rouge and
"lightly" buffed off all rust spots. Now I still Tuff cloth
them, but only once a day or every other day. I'm happy to
say no spots have ever returned.

I don't think that tuff cloth or marine tuff cloth is the best defense against rust. I have been using marine tuff cloth for 3 years and a tiny spot formed on one of my bead blast folders.

I am switching over to Break Free CLP or corrosion X because I read many positive threads on these products on different forums. Many guns owners use Break Free CLP and highly recommend it.

I have several CRKT knives, and I find them to be of good quality. The only thing I can complain about is the plastic sheath on the Kasper/Polkowski companion. The knife in itself is very good, but the sheath needs redesigning, most likely in a different material.

Mr. Ekman.

What is your exact problem with the sheaths(2)?

How would you redesign them?

What different material would you use?

I'll be glad to forward your suggestions to CRKT.

Dude CRKT is NOT crap!! I own many CRKT knives and i have never been disappointed. Exactly two weeks ago I went to the lake of the ozarks for the weekend. while swimming with my sister in the lake, my CRKT bear claw that was clipped to my trunks fell off in the water. I looked for it for about an hour but then gave up and went back home to mope around for awhile. The next morning, I went out with a huge magnet and dragged it around in the water for awhile. after about 10 minutes, i picked it up with the magnet. after doing a victory lap around the dock i began inspecting it, and i found absolutely no traces of rust or discoloration on any part of the knife!! I am a CRKT customer for life and I think their knives are great. I was so impressed that i bought a knife from the 14k summit series on the way home.

brandon:rolleyes:

Couldn't someone just use sandpaper and sand the bead blasted finish off? If that is possible than it sounds like a really easy solution.

If you've got alot of time on your hands you may be able to put a mirror finish on a blade that's been bead-blasted...assuming you have access to a good buffing wheel and alot of rouge. Sandpaper...uh, no.

JD, welcome to the Forums!
I would like to see Cmpanion's sheath in Kydex (or Concealex) with Tek-Lok clip allowing different carry positions. Something like SPYDERCO Moran Featherweight.
I also would give up with neck sheath, the knife is simply too large and heavy for neck carry.

784... Bugs is right...you got off real easy. ;)
As I am sure you realize now CRKT is NOT ****! Your knife care methods were..:)

I have a rescue knife made of ATS-55. It is exposed to salt water about 100 days a year. In the past, surface rust has formed each day no matter what I lubed it with. Each night I would rinse it in fresh water, scrub it down w/ SCOTCH BRIGHT BLUE (the no scratch version), and lube it up real good. Only to usually repeat the process again the next night.

The rust was NOT the fault of the knife or the manufacture.. It was the fault of SALT WATER. The care had to be done or the knife would have ended up a piece of crap....... :( :D

This year I used WHITE LIGHTENING on the same knife in the same conditions. I put it on everything metal just like I did w/ the other lubes in years past. Guess what????? No rust at all. Still rinse it in fresh water each night mostly out of habit I guess. There is no surface rust at all. This stuff is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

I mostly cut rope w/ the knife, and it rides in my right pocket each day; where it is exposed to salt water 8 thru 12 hours a day. It is usually not submerged, but on accasion it is.

The WHITE LIGHTENING handles both senerios equally well.

Hope this helps, :)

PS...... WHITE LIGHTENING CO. , If your listening; this is a good endorsement and I'm about out. Why don't you contact me and send me some more on the house. This commentary will probably sell a lot of product for you. I can give you detailed endorsements in marine and offshore use and results.................;)

Thanks for the welcome Sergiusz.

I'd like to see the same things as you. But, I hope you agree the price would be substantially higher.

As it stands now, with the current sheaths, the CRKT Cpmpanion offers a BIG bang for the buck.

One more thing. I really don't understand the apathy about the two sheaths. I know a number of hard chargers ( did I say "hard chargers"?) who have NO problems with them. Personally, I have no problem with the sheaths.

Hey JD -- I was one of the earlier complainers about the sheaths that CRKT sent with the Companion. The primary problem with both of mine was that they didn't easily let go of the knife. I mean I got a wedgie and a half trying to pull the knife out of both.

I ordered a sheath from Eric/Normark. I love it. It is more flexible, in terms of positioning it than either/both of the original sheaths.

I must admit that after I'd ordered the sheath from Eric, I kept putting the knife into one of the sheaths from CRKT and removing it. All of a sudden, maybe 40 maybe 60 withdrawals, it suddenly started to relax a bit, and let go of the knife easier. Trouble is, now I can't find the box that has the 2 sheaths, the cord and chain. Am sure I'll locate it someday, hopefully before I forget what the contents are for.

Excuses Excuses why should you have to wipe your knife with oil and scrub it down every night after using it i have had plenty of cheap k mart knives on my boat that didn,t rust at all i think Crkt uses any metal they like whos's checking they are made in Taiwan i have had no luck with them guess it comes down to who wants to spend the money for a good knife and who wants to buy a cheap "o" you get what you pay for most of the time i see that Crkt for 100.00 and it just kills me lol lol has anyone really bought one please let me know i have a bunch of frost knives you would like also it is kinda like tractors you don,t buy a new Murray for 900.00 and drive it up to you friends new 3000.00 John Deere and tell him how much better yours is cause you paid less well do YA!!!!!!

Why should you have to change the oil in your car? Why should you have to clean a revolver after a day at the range? Why should you have to sand and paint a wrought-iron fence every few years?

Proper maintenance is a requirement for most durable goods.

Yes, well, 420J2 is very stainless. Ask around; I'm sure everyone will agree that it's the best knife steel available.
