CRKT Ken Onion Eros

I am carrying the first CRKT prototype Eros for everyday. But I have a custom one I carry when I put my dancin shoes on . :)

Thanks Ken,

that's what I thought you had clipped to your pocket at the Blade Show this year.... and you weren't wearing dancin' shoes.......

I think it's a real testimony that you carry the CRKT version - and the first prototype - does that mean they got it right pretty early on?

How do you place the Ripple(s) and the Eros - other than calling them both "Genticals" (do you know how difficult it is to spell that correctly?)

Thanks,

Yes: I loved those at blade also: the only knives that really made me want them more were the Sebenzas.

Extraordinary review! Really painstaking and informative, must have taken a long time to get it all together, thanks!

It's certainly made an impact on me, I usually favour Traditional Old school knives, but these two were so sleek and elegant that they really caught my attention. Modern of course but the look of the design is impressively timeless, that's a real piece of genius. I like this as a modern interpretation/development of the pen-knife. Very easy to carry, unobtrusive but attractive and plausible.

Many thanks W.

Many thanks for your very kind words.

You expressed the integration of traditional and modern of these "Genticals" - the Eros and Ripples really well - that's why Ken Onion is one of my favorite designers.

If you haven't seen it perhaps this:

I did buy the Ripple 1st production knife before the Ripple 2 came out .
Thank you for that information that the Ripple is larger than the 2nd version.
With a little practice this knife fly's open .. In reference to
the Eros I am not sure that the clip will hold the knife in my pocket.
If you buy either knife you will never leave the house without it. :D

The clip on the Eros is actually quite secure - it's my at home EDC -
it is carried, and used so unclipped then clipped a lot.

It is not that good in the front pocket carry on the right:

Ripple_ClipFnt2.jpg

compared to the larger Ripple - as the part of the clip to the left sticks up a bit if it is carried vertically along the seam of the pocket - otherwise pushing it all the way down on that part of the clip tends to rotate the knife body toward horizontal and blocking access to the pocket...

Rear pocket however is very good - as the clip orientation tends to push the butt in toward hugging the seam of the pocket:

You're right about the knives though - the Eros and Ripple(s) are some of the best factory produced knives I have the pleasure to have.

That is a good idea to hold them in your back pocket...
Did Ken Onion make the jeans to???

I wore my ripple in my back pocket today and almost ripped the leather seat in my
car. Looks like it goes right back to my front pocket in the way of my wallet.

Interesting...
which part of the Ripple was catching on the car seat, please?

I also EDC the larger Ripple (and all the other clipped knives) - in my right rear jeans pocket (I like the way the knife opening is in the seam of the pocket for a safer carry) - and haven't had any problems with any.

The tip of the Ripple's clip curves out to make it easy to slide the knife in your pocket. That curve snagged my seat. When I look at your photos I see that the Eros is not shaped with the same clip as the Ripple and has no curve action at the tip.....
I put the knife in my right back pocket . My next knife will be the Eros !! Perfect for back pocket use. I would think that some seats will snag and some will not with the
Ripple.

So the review was awesome!

But UnknownVT sucks!
How awesome was the review...My wallet is lighter due to the Eros in my pocket!
UnknownVT sucks! ;)

Vincent , I reground the blade and polished the flats for a smoother action . The handle on the first one was great the blade was a little rough. I'm not sure what steel is in this prototype either . It doesn't hold an edge like the one I got at Blade show.My mother stole that one so I'm back to carrying the proto. No problem though , I know this guy that can do a pretty good job of sharpening ;) It is really smooth and fast now and so thin it cuts like a laser.I gotta say Vincent I play with this Gentical more than I probably should. :D

.... didn't your parents warn you about your eyesight from doing that? :D

I think I may have figured out why the Eros is so astounding in cutting everyday things - like opening envelopes and cutting paper (slicing paper along the fold) -

Eros_bladeCurve.jpg

I put a straight red line in the picture
and one can see that the Eros blade cutting edge is one continuous shallow belly or curve -
that just reminded me of another blade that cuts really well using the same principle -
the legendary Japanese katana sword......

Great review, thanks a lot.
I saw this one in a knife magazine at the bookstore the otherday, and have been thinking about it ever since.

I absolutely am enamored with the blade shape, it just really looks awesome to me. Additionally, the scales look awesome, and I would expect them to be made of zytel like one of the spydercos that have all the little holes in them and such, but the fact that it's Ti is awesome. I would really love to pick one of these up someday.

I think the only part I don't care for as much is the strange pocket clip, and the huge writing on the blade, I would much prefer it to jsut be plain stonewashed or polished or whatever.

Either way, it's still a great looking knife. Thanks again for doing the review.
