CRKT M16 Spear Point

even if you are looking for a small knife, i would still seriously consider the M21-02. aside from the more useful blade shape it also just looks and feels like a better knife.

same aluminum handle as the M16, however the blade is double ground as opposed to chisel-ground, and satin finish as opposed to bead-blasted rust-magnet finish (although this is not an issue if you get the coated blades). you can also easily find them in plain edge, as opposed to the M16s which are lately only available in plain edge in the EDC compact versions. chisel-ground is also kindof annoying to cut with and sharpen (for me, anyway), so i immediately put a proper double ground edge on my M16 spearpoints when i got them.

M21-02
closed length: 4.25"
blade length: 3.12"
cutting edge: 3.00"
thickness: 0.12"
steel: AUS-8

so its the same size as the smaller M16s, and only 1/4" larger than the EDCs but a lot more substantial looking with a thicker/wider blade.

M16-01 compact EDK
closed length: 4.00"
blade Length: 3.00"
thickness: 0.08"
steel: AUS-8

M16-03
closed length: 4.75"
blade length: 3.5"
thickness: 0.1"
steel: AUS-8, or AUS-6/AUS-4 on zytel models

as for your question re: sharpness, some of mine arrived razor sharp out of the box. other CRKT knives ive ordered arrived kindof dull. i dont think that with production manufacturers its a safe bet to assume that just because one knife arrives razor sharp that all of them will - i seem to notice in these forums that its hit and miss (heh, some people receive knives without an edge entirely). you should not let factory edge influence your decisions much since the factory edge doesnt last long and youre going to have to resharpen it anyway.

cheers,

M21s are great knives and have thus inspired sort of a rivalry among CRKT followers (with M16 users). My only complaint about the M21 is I simply don't like how it looks as much as the M16s. The recurve-ish style blade cuts fantastic...any of you that have ever used a blade that gets bigger torwards the end knows that it's a really effective way to slice things.

So I would give the M21 to preference...but I do think you're getting probably a better cutting impliment out of that blade style.

The only problem with the M21s is that the blade reminds me too much of my Rush blade. I want a different looking knife, not one that is that similar.

edit: Nevermind. I compared the two and they aren't very similar at all. I was really looking for a black blade though, and you can't get an M21 in any other colors but dark grey and silver..

I would probably get the M21-02 seeing as it is probably the next size up from the 01K..but I really wanted that black blade. Maybe I can get used to the silver/grey color of it.

Sorry for the big bump and the double post..just wanted to let you guys know that on Friday or Monday, I'll be the proud owner of an M21-02 from New Graham :)

I ordered it last night, and asked for Third Day shipping. Does NewGraham usually ship the next day? If that's the case, hopefully they shipped it today, and I'll get it on Friday or Monday (Not sure)

I just wanted to thank all of you in helping me decide which knife to get. I'm sure I would've loved any of the knives I was suggested to get, CRKT seems like a very high quality brand.

Thanks guys,

-Django

We ship the same day of the order most of the time unless it's after 3:30-:400pm when it comes through, if so it goes out the next day, thanks for the order :)

Thanks for the reply.

Very anxious to get the knife, thanks for letting me know that :) I ordered it last night at about 8:00 PM, so I guess it got shipped today.

By the way, I sent you an email about the UPS tracking code, sorry for the impatience :o

Thanks for selling it to me :D

Are Zytel handle scales really that bad? I just ordered an M16-13 with Zytel and I think I've seen and handled one and it wasn't exactly "whippy"--it was still pretty solidly built (compared to most cheap knives and even other, better brands like Buck). The only thing I'm worried about is whether it comes with LAWKS and whether the clip will stay on as well as with aluminum scales. Do they use screw-hole liners for the clip screws on M16s?
Seems like they would. They ARE really nice knives.

PS--Do ALL M16s come with LAWKS?

The zytel handles arent bad at all, I've got an m-16-13z, and tis good for what I used it for, but I eventually went on to another knive... I currently carry a m21-02 and love it, just small enough for confort and more sheeple friendly than my m21-14sf (which for where I work is a HUGE blade) when not at work, I either carry the m21-14sf or a cold steel recon 1.
BTW I noticed waleyworld not carries the m16 (with the tanto blade and autolawks system) for $20, would be a good user to just try out... if ya dont like it, you didnt really waste all that much, as far as the tanto goes, I still have somewhat trouble getting used to it... Though my dad loves the blade, he uses only tanto blades now. I prefer a spear point, more practical to me.

FWIW, my m16-13z, lifted up a 86LBS rear subframe off my best friends fingers while at work, we couldnt find anything to pry under it, and just a limited area to work with to get something under there, I didn't hesitate to shove the blade between the frame and the lift to free his fingers, both blade and handle...and Joes fingers survived, with minor scuffs and cuts. HTH!
And congrats on the m21-02... you're a CRKT fan for life now!!...get used to it!

I'm surely not a steel expert like some on the forum but the Zytel handle is fine, if that's what you like. The big difference between the 4" Zytel M16 and the 4" M21 is that the M16 blade is AUS-6M and the M21 is AUS-8A. The AUS-8A is be harder steel that will hold a sharp edge for longer than the AUS-6M.

I picked it up from the Campus Post Office the other day and I LOVE it!!
Everything about it shouts "STURDILY BUILT!!"
I don't think I'll ever buy another Kmart knife again, unless for my future kids.

PS--However I do have one complaint at the moment.....whenever I try to flick it open with the thumbstud my thumb slides off onto the serrations and I get cut. I am working on that....I think I just have to get used to the different shape of the handle than my other folders. It doesn't have a "cutout" for your thumb to rest before you flick it open and the thumbstud doesn't protrude past the handle. Maybe I'll just end up using the flipper. How do you guys open your M16s? Do you use the stud or the flipper?

I picked up a M16-13Z today from my local Gander Mountain store for $24.99 (regular price, not on sale). Granted the zytel handle material isn't as desireable as the more expensive M16 versions, but it's a heck of a bargain.

The M16 seems very well made. I've carried a CRKT KISS for years and I've always wanted another CRKT knife.
