CRKT Press Release - Customs

Johno, please, please try to remember that this thread is also being read by people who are not necessarily friendly to our cause. I sent letters to Senators Warner aand Robb of Virginia and to Congressman Moran of my district of Virginia. Now I am pretty certain of Warner's position on this, but not so certain of Robb's nor of Moran's. Both of them favor strong gun control. We do not need them reading your statements! Please, please listen to those who know lobbying and back off for the moment. You can carry on your debate at another time in another, more appropriate thread, but this one could turn into a disaster for all of us.

Spark, for God's sake, put an end to this!

Just revoke my registration.

You people need to post something similar to the following on the Bladeforums entry page:

An interest in knives is necessary but not sufficient in order to become a registered member, as one also needs to promote politically correct thinking.

...So now we are all fighting amongst ourselves?.

This must be part of a "divide and conquer" plan, huh?.

In response to 'hopethisisntakens" contention that the Federal government won't be held liable for damages, I disagree.

If Customs is found to be in error here the Federal government can be sued for damages.

I think Customs has crossed the line here and I can't think of many companies that are as "CLEAN" as CRKT when it comes to their line of products.

They build a fine quality knife that's a great value and the entire line is free of buttons and springs and switchblady things.

CRKT has a STRONG defense and CUSTOMS has a very weak, ill-conceived and legally contrived case here.

This could work out well if handled adeptly. A jury will see this for what it is, harrasement.

I think if the defense parades an endless variety of obviously non violating knives in front of a jury and shows that only by the absolute harshest possible interpretation of the law are these knives even close to being a violation by the "spirit" of the law, CRKT will win this case.

I have an old boy scout knife with a busted back spring that opens by gravity that I'll donate to the defense.

Viewed as pretty harmless, especially by the over 40 set (jury) that carried them or associate them with scouts, but technically "illegal" by the harshest interpretation of the law, this one piece of evidence could shot the case for customs.

Jim and others....

Help me to better understand the issues here. If I'm naive and missing something please fill me in.

The way I see it is that the fate of CRKT's knives and the future of the importation of such knives will be decided by the judical system based upon current law and the merits of the case. It seems that it would be an incorrect interpretation of the law and very unpopular with the public if the confiscation of liner-locks is upheld as legitimate.

I feel for CRKT and other manufacturers that must endure these threats to their business but I have a hard time seeing how any posts on this forum (regardless of the views expressed) are going to influence the outcome. I'd rather have divergent viewpoints stay in the posts as long as they don't include libel and slander. Also, FWIW, based on the facts heard so far, I think that the CRKT confiscation was totally unjustified.

This is ridiculous!!! It's damn near embarrassing!!! Get back to the topic at hand. As stated above, this will be read by Feds. and Senators!!!
Some people should take their own advice too.

We need to pull together to fight this.

Folks, it appears the arguments here have become moot. According to Kit Carson in this thread, the case has been resolved and customs is releasing the knives.

OK, I think tha's done it on my end. Many thanks to Johno for starting the cleanup.

The nightmare is over, for now.

In response to those who asked "what's the big deal, it's just imports?":

You're sorta right...if it was JUST about imports, it would be a simple matter to tell Spyderco, CRKT, Al Mar and others to change their business practices

.

The real kicker was that the Feds use the same definition to sort out whether or not a dealer sold a "switchblade" to a private citizen.

In other words, Customs in Portland had decided that Mike Turber committed a FELONY when he sold me a SIFU last year.

Not good.

Worse, pretty much every retail gun dealer also sells some knives...and more than any administration in history, Clinton's gang have been trying to kill off the gun dealers and manufacturers. It doesn't take a political mind on the level of Kissinger to figure out who they were after next...but the "knife only" dealers were by no means safe.

Last, some states that ban "switchblades" don't define the term - they leave that to the Feds. Therefore literally millions of people with modest cutlery on pocket-clips were threatened with heavy misdemeanor or even felony busts.

It was worth getting worked up over.

Can this thread be cleaned up any further? I'd love to see some participation from government officials, but I'm afraid some of the above comments will cause them to think of "us" as a bunch of idiots. I dunno...but I think we should take advantage of this opportunity to gather some official support.
