CRKT Provoke Ripping up my Pocket

The CRKT Provoke is incredibly innovative, but the pocket clip sucks big time. Three prominent screw heads snag fiercely on your jeans when you try to pull the knife out of your pocket, not only making the knife really difficult to deploy, but quickly chewing up your pocket, too. I need a way to cover those screw heads with something smooth and semi-permanent. I was thinking maybe some epoxy-like substance might do it, but I'd want it to eventually be removable (without marring the knife). Any ideas? The only thing I could think of off the top of my head is that clear stuff that hardens under UV light; it's one of those "as seen on TV" products.

This was an early complaint of mine about the Provoke. I think the clip is pretty useless and that the knife should come w/a sheath.

Apparently, some Chinese fakes on EB do. The only problem (apart from the fact that they're fakes) is that they cost about $75 and you have to pay for return shipping to China (or Hong Kong), whatever that costs, if the sheath doesn't fit. Otherwise, the only other choice is to have one made out of leather or kydex which will cost as much if not more than that or try to find a sheath made for a different knife or tool that will fit.

I'd look further into these options if I really wanted to carry the Provoke, but fortunately I don't.

I would be all over that if it qas made by a different company.

My 0350 tore apart pockets. Had to round off much of the overly aggressive jimping to be able to carry it.

Personally I would just fill the screws with JB Weld, sand them smooth, and assume that the clip ain't coming off.

It may come to that, but I would rather not have something permanent on there if I don't absolutely need it. A lateral sheath sounds promising.

You might want to give Sugru a try. The putty like substance is a moldable silicon glue that's very tough and durable when dry. Bonds to metal, glass, ceramic, etc.

The Chinese clones do come with a very nice multi-position kydex sheath thats easy to draw from, and with some practice you can get it out and open in one quick movement. The clones also have countersunk tapered screws on the pocket clip....no snagging, no tearing up the pockets. The knife can be withdrawn quickly and if done right the knurling acts like a wave feature and the knife opens as it comes out.
One other thing I just noticed looking at the pictures here....The entire clip on the CRKT knife sits in a small well area, leaving all the edges exposed. The clip on the clone is entirely flush with the ring all around.

I’ve been carrying mine in a horizontal belt sheath

Yeah, think I saw that in your review video and just watched it again.

Think you say that it's a Maxpedition Sheath. Found a 5" version (that's the exact length of the Provoke) online for $22.30, which would be a cheap solution to the clip problem.

Going to order 1 just for the heck of it to see how it works for me w/the Provoke. If I don't like it, I can just return it or use it for something else

Thanks for the info and the photos. THAT should definitely come w/the Provoke or offered as an option.

In my case the provoke isn't tearing up my pocket because of the screws or the clip but I think the tip of the blade is catching the inside of the pocket when I wave deploy it; which I find super easy to do. I wonder if some flex seal on the inside of the pocket would do the trick. I personally appreciate and have had zero problems with the clip, but haven't compared it to any of the clones.
As far as the sheath is concerned, crkt will be releasing theirs next month and will come standard with every new provoke. They told me that it will send them out for free to anyone who's already has a provoke.

Funny you mentioned that. I used to use Sugru for very small projects (because it would come in these tiny packets and be red, white, blue, or black, I believe), and I thought about Sugru for this application, but even when it dries, it's slightly rubbery, so I worry that it would peel right off. Still, worth a shot. Maybe I'll buy a few pouches from Amazon.

Interesting idea, and it reminds me of the Sugru idea. Is it possible to remove the FlexSeal later without marring the finish of the knife or clip?

After reading your message, I called CRKT's customer service. They said that the new sheath should be available in roughly two weeks and that they will not be included with new Provoke knives but instead will be available as an additional purchase. If it turns out I'm wrong, then it turns out that the customer service rep. gave me bad info.

Cool!

Did they provide any pics/illustrations or tell you what material would be used? Would rather buy the sheath for the Provoke from CRKT than "make do" w/a sheath made for a different knife/purpose.

I didn't ask about the material. I asked about the cost, but I got the feeling, from the long pause and slowly articulated answer, that the customer service rep. was completely guessing on that one, which is why I didn't supply that info. Also, I wouldn't take the "2 weeks" as written in stone; the rep. may have been guesstimating. The takeaway is that a sheath is coming and that it shouldn't be too much longer, which is good news. We'll just have to be patient.

Yeah, I won't hold my breath.

Don't need it "right away" anyway, since I never intend to carry the Provoke; just want it to complete the ensemble. Bought an aftermarket kydex sheath for my MicroTech Halo V for the same reason.
