Darkestthicket ? Thats a neat name . Is it from where you grew up or hunt ?

I'm hoping it's from the band, The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. That'd be neat.

R.I.P Steve Irwin.

Rest esay Steve,

Yea, I shed a tear for him and his family. There are far many more in this world who I would rather see gone.

Family says he would have wanted it released, familiy is deciding at this time.

RIP Steve Irwin. Died with his King Gee's on doing what he loved. I saw an interview on our Denton show recently and he struck me then as a bloke who never wanted to be old - if that's true then he got his wish.

He irritated me at first with his overblown caricature of an Aussie - but I came full circle after a few years, realising that his hyperbolic personality was no act.

Folks I know up North of here fear Stingrays above all sea creatures - make sure to shoot them several times with a .22 before going near them when hunting. One bloke got a barb in his foot one day and blew up like the michelin man; hovered near death in hospital for 3 weeks before pulling through. One in the heart would have been instantaneous.

So True Codger 64...

but he does get a nomnation for the Darwin award. He made his money and fame "taunting wildlife"

Can anyone think of a wildlife show that has ever come close to the popularity of Mr. Irwins? I think that he knew he had to be the one going out there and putting himself in harms way or the show would never have been quite so popular. He used the show as a very effective tool to bring awareness to his cause, that being wildlife conservation. He was a smart individual.

The world would be much better off with a few less Henry Fords and Lee Ioccoca's and a few more Steve Irwin's and Jacques-Yves Cousteau's.

R.I.P. Steve...

Darwin award,imo..

When you have a child, its time to do a realitycheck on your behavior.

If your goal in life is to drop down on alligators and stick a finger up their ass and have someone film it...shits gonna happen eventually...

But if leaving orphans is your cup of tea, then go on matey.

Firefighters and cops with families die all the time. But they were doing something valuable, and normally in as safe a way as possible.People in the LEO community who intentionally take unnecessary risks are considered idiots imo.

There was no need for that guy to do the stupid shit he did.Sure it was entertaining to watch. Like Nascar crashes.

It doesnt change the fact that he brought it on himself.100%

RIP Steve...

The man did alot for animal conservation, and brought alot of smiles to the young kids, like my nephew, who would watch his show over cartoons. I at first couldnt stand the man, but then understood him and what he was doing, then I found myself watching his show with my nephew and learning things I would have never known.

Thanks to Steve and his family for shareing him with all of us, he made watching and understanding wildlife that much more fun....

I doubt that most of the people here would put such little value in the things Irwin did.
He did great things to raise awareness and understanding of conservation issues. Te research he funded lead to advancements in the way animals are cared for in captivity and the way they are cared for by vets the world over.

He could have never had the influence he commanded if it werent for the popularity that he amassed by doing that "dumb shit".

I have small children and had to have a bit of a reality check when they were born, but the dangers I exposed myself too contributed almost nothing to humanity. Steve Irwin saw the things he did as important enough to risk his life to acomplish.

Agree or disagree with that decision, dont sell his accomplishments short.

One of life's facts....everyone is going to die....when your time comes....it comes , at least he was doing something he enjoyed 100% .

so i guess the alaskan crab fisherman who dies while on the job is an idiot too? what about the WV coal miners who died on the job, are they to be considered idiots as well??? or is it only if they have children? i guess if I want to have kids someday i should put aside my interest in anything remotely dangerous and get a job selling avon. (not to offend anyone that does sell avon.)

Did you read the part about "INTENTIONALLY TAKEN UNNECESSARY RISKS" in my message. Or did you choose to ignore it?

He used to fed crocs with a piece of meat in one hand and his own baby in the other.Thats documented.

I dont think that a single tree was saved because of his antics that wouldnt have been saved had he done really good quality, exciting programs that didnt involve doing absolutely assenine stunts.

I mean come on..

Here in Australia, Steve was much loved. He was a man of the common people who never let his fame change him. He grew up with animals on his father's small zoo. He didn't fear wildlife like other people do. What you and I believed to be dangerous I believe he genuinely didn't believe to be so. He had been around them all his life and loved them. The respect most Australians had for Steve was shown when his family were offered a State Funeral. As was typical of the Irwin family, they turned the offer down because this didn't really fit in with who Steve was. Even one of the State football teams wore black arm bands as a mark of respect following his death. The "Tall Poppy Syndrome" is a often quoted part of the Australian culture. It is where some say we tend to knock people who achieve great success. It's linked to our past and our hatred for the class system of England during our early years of settlement in Australia. Actually the "Tall Poppies" we hate are usually those with inflated egos who try to make out that they are superior beings. That wasn't Steve and that's why he could achieve massive success and still be loved in Australia.

He aplogized for the croc feeding with his baby wrapped up in his arm.

Probablly not a single tree but several forests....due to making several generations more aware of animal habitat.

We have a similar thing to the tall poppy syndrome in Finland.Really.Im not surprised that australia has one as well, considering the history.

And yeah, people probably did watch his shows more because of the riskfactor.

Still, I think HES bottom line motivation was adrenaline. Always.Even with the baby thing.

And thats a bit..i dont know..dumb?

But I did MMA partly cause of sdrenalin so...who am I to criticize:)

I'm really nobody to say but I really doubt that his drive came from the risk factor. He truly loved animals and really dedicated his life to conservation.

People in other countries besides austrailia saw very little of what he did beyond his TV antics, and thats truly a shame, he was so much more than just a wacky host. That fact is evidenced by the outpouring of respect your now seeing in the world media.
