Crucible Materials to be auctioned off September 21

But Bernanke says the economy is recovering !!
I hope something can be salvaged , they've been so good to the knife making industry.

Maybe someone can help me here, does purchasing the "research division" also purchase the patents?

This is the reason that I stopped my development on CruForge-V. I knew that when crucible went belly up, it was going to effect many makers, as a lot had gone exclusively CPM steels. As I learned more about the crucible crash, I decided that it was not worth my time and effort to develop a steel that may never be available again.
I did enough experimenting with CruForge-V to find that it produces and overall blade that is no better or no worse than 1084....of which I have a huge supply.
As most others, I hate to see them go under, but basing my business on the hope that whomever purchases the company MIGHT continue to produce the steels just isn't something I was, or am, willing to bank on.

I suspect that a number of makers who never planned for this sort of thing are going to be scrambling to find a reliable source of new steels in order to continue what they do. Here's hoping that whomever winds up with the company, patents, etc. sees fit to continue production of Crucible's steels, but I doubt it will happen quickly, if at all.

I'm thinking I should get more Spydies in my humble collection, ASAP...And maybe 110v Shallot to replace the one that grew legs...

What do you guys think, are a lot of these knives gonna be collecters items or too early to tell? Or are there so many in circulation that it won't affect the collectability?

I think that, for things that were already "collectible," it can only help, but for the vast majority of knives out there, not so much. There's an awful lot of it already on the market.

Thanks for this, Ed.

I was biting my nails wondering if I should put in a last order for some CruforgeV but ultimately decided I probably wouldn't because it probably won't be around again when I want to buy it again and now that I have read that I know I won't bother... especially since I just made an order this week for some 1084 and 52100.

Very well said, Ed.

Lorin, good question. I would think the patents would go with the name (Crucible).

Maybe you and Devin can start a specialty steel company :)

i saw that i would have to move to a different SS for kitchen knives and im not happy about that

between cpm154 and cpm3v
least i can get a good SS replacment
so far as i know no one makes a 3v replacement

how about Latrobe Pyrovan, if they make it in a usable size?

or maybe Carpenter PD #1? totally different alloying from 3V, but seemingly similar properties

I wish you could get VG10 in this country. I think it is probably a little bit better than CPM 154.

But yeah, I'm not aware of anything else like 3V

I'm not either. That is why we bought enough 3V and also S30V to last a while. We never got interested in CPM 154 and so won't miss it. The 3V and S30V we will miss when ours is gone. We haven't found anything we like better than those two. Hopefully by the time we run out there will be some new steels available that we can all get crazy over.

Finding a company with people that are knowledgeable, available for help, interested in your success with their product, willing to deal in small quantities and friendly on top of all that is going to be the hard part. We could see the writing on the wall and just took the approach that we would get what we thought we would need for the foreseeable future while we could. We didn’t want to give up on Crucible, but you have to take care of your own business and it is easier if you have the steels you like than if you don't. I wish we could have bought more. Crap... I wish they hadn't gone under at all and I pray that the employees are successful in finding employment in a situation better than they had.

Coincidence, or fate?

Awful news about Crucible... they were a boon to the knifemaking community, and the knife world is a lesser place with their absence.

man...bad news all around....they had so many great knife steels to work with. they were probably the best at documenting their steel for use in knives. I don't have any where near enough CPM154 on hand...:(

they are flat out of 3/32 cpm154
so now last place i haev got it was near 2X my old price

i think i will call annd see if i can get more 3v for stock as i love that steel

Holy crap! Does this mean all CPM steels are gone forever-ish? Damn, I never got a chance to pick up a 3v knife!

Someone better pick up the patents! At least Ive got an S90V Mule Team.
