Hi Guys,

I have a cold steel gurkha kukri, I used it in the summer to cut down some brambles and sadly the blade became all stained as you can see in the picture below.

Does anybody have any idea how I can clean it up? Would it be possible to bring it back to its original shine?

Thanks

Mine was affected the same way. I used 800/1000/1500 and 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper to remove the gunk and restore it to a nice smooth finish. It is a work tool for me thus I don't want to care for a mirror finish.

scotchbrite pads will do the job with lots of elbow grease

Why bother? I appreciate the various stains and scratches on my blades, it makes them 'mine'.

I find with carbon steel, especially, a loaded strop will take the staining away easiest. Over time, the finish just becomes more polished. Does not scratch, or remove metal near as fast as even high grit sandpaper.

Stainless steel cleaning paste for cleaning steel and stove tops. Available at some grocery stores and all kitchen shops.
Leaves your blade beautiful polished.

If I'd like to remove patina I'd use Flitz with the finest steel wool and if that's not enough with Brasso.
But if it's a worker why would you?

flitz, simichrome or mother's mag polish on a rag... no additional abrasives necessary.

Be aware, Flitz and Simichrome will fade the lettering. I like a more subdued look for graphics, so it's no big deal to me.
Also, treating it with Flitz rifle/gun/knife wax after polishing will help ward off any future staining.

If the lettering is a concern stay away from Brasso for sure. It's magnitudes worse than Flitz but then that's what makes it so good at patina removal.

Yes Brasso is great product for removing staining on carbon steel, if you don't like the natural patina!
