To start out i like Cold steel (i know their reputation isn't , I have two of their folders and i really like them, I have held the SRK at work when we had it, it went on out clearance list and i didn't pick it up and it was the Carbon V version i don't own anything in Carbon V but I've heard its good stuff. I'm going to start camping and hiking at some of the local parks here around the area say about September after the August heat is past and want a good say 6" fixed i have a Gerber Prodigy but thats more of my bug out bag type knife. Looking online i see that the dimensions on the SRK and the A1 are really about the same about 11" overall. Those are the two knives that pop out at me right now. I've not been camping in years and when i did go it was with my parents and i didn't have knives then (not the case now). I will be carrying my Emerson Mini Commander with me just in case i need something smaller. Now i want CONSTRUCTIVE advice, any other knife suggestions are welcome if they are under about $100.

no experience with that cold steel knife, and no experience using that fallkniven, but i have held one and the grinds look good and "cut-y".

as i understand it, the master hunter is a good woods-knife from coldsteel.

also, the cold steel bushman is a good knife for not so much cash. it isn't a great chopper and is a bit akward for fine tasks, but it works well for the dollar

you could probably find something for right around $100 in the makers for sale area right here on the boards that would work very fine for you.

to complete the sentence (I know that their reputation isn't the best here on the forums) but I think that im going to go for the Fallkniven.

need to make sure i complete my thoughts before i press enter, i think im going to go for the fallkniven but im going to still look around, and again any other suggestions are very welcome. I'm not going to start camping till around September so i have plenty of time.

I've used the SRK to skin moose and around camp with total satisfaction. It's a rugged, useful knife that holds a superb edge and cuts beautifully (once you've thinned back the original bevel a bit). I wouldn't worry a bit if it was my only knife on a survival trek. Maybe not as classy as the Fallkniven (I love my F1, BTW) but a good reliable knife. Either the A1 or the SRK would serve you well IMHO, but the SRK might be a bit less expensive.

I would take the SRK over the A1. It's a good high carbon steel, the A1's grind is a little too thick for my liking. My SRK has served me well over many years.

What steel does CS use for the SRK now-a-days? The CarbonV, CS name, Camillus steel as they made all of the CarbonV knives for CS, was the same steel used with the Becker line of knives. Good carbon steel that took an edge easily and held it well. If they have gone to an inexpensive stainless, I'd pass on their product.

I'd recommend the A1 over the SRK either way. Check your park regs before carrying a fixed blade sheath knife. Many parks have rules against such things.

they use AUS 8A steel for the SRK knives now but you can still find them in carbon v on the online

Between the two?, A1 gets the vote, better knife over all.

Although I have masterhunter in CV that I love, great cutter and takes an awsome edge, definetly a fav for carbon knives.

the A1 is taking the lead right now but the S1 might be it because it's a 5" knife might be more accepted in the parks but ill look it up and see, street law is that it's 5 1/2" fixed of folding, also i see the Puma White Hunter is an attractive looking knife i've heard that its a good one and just looked it up its nice but its more expensive than the others though.

Don't overlook the RAT Cutlery line (www.ratcutlery.com) and I've had luck with Derek at www.knivesshipfree.com

It would be a little more, but I absolutely love my RC-4 and hopefully later this month the RC-6 will be out.

I love their knives.

I have a CarbonV SRK that I can't complain about honestly - I've had it for years and years.

I am looking at the Fallkniven down the line though.

I much prefer the SRK..the A1 is more money, the grind is harder to maintain in the woods ( this is my opinion of convex grinds in general) and the SRK is a great knife that I have used since I was a kid, I bought one when they first came out, they had shallow grinds back then, the second gen. in Carbon V is great, the grinds are perfect. I dont care about the CS companies practices....they dont affect me in the least. I will say that the A1 is a fine blade...just not quite as good as the SRK, IMO.

I own and have used both knives, and they will both serve you well. I tend to prefer the A1 as it just feels/cuts/looks better IMHO. You might also look at the RAT-6, RAT-5, or the RC-4. TOPS bush ranger is one heck of a knife as well.

I don' t own a SRK, but an A1, and it' s awesome, super tough, convex edge, lam. VG10 steel..be sure to check out RAT cutlery for a <100$ camping knife, especially the RC-4.

I have owned the SRK (Carbon V) for a few years now, it is tough, reliable, and can take a lot of abuse.

well heck there are 6 votes for the A1 and 5 for the SRK ill just have to get both and have my brother of friend carry the CS so we can compare. Of course id get the CS first because the Carbon V isnt going to be around forever
