CS Trail Master fails miserably

Are you surprised? It's Cold Steal. Don't willingly allow yourself to be robbed. You'd be better off flushing your money down the crapper (I'm prepared for the backlash, I just don't really care). Do yourself a favor and go ESEE or something similarly great.

I am a union Boilermaker by trade and I work with steel on a daily basis.I am a certified pressure welder with over twenty contractors, crane cordinator, and a T.V.A master rigger.I am not trying to brag but illusrate my experience. That being said I have witnessed things far more suprising than the T.M. failure posted here. With the right amount of pressure, wrong angle, wrong tool for the job,and many other variables bad things will happen.I could give examples but I am already getting long winded.I recently became the owner of a carbon v T.M. and a Recon Scout after being patient and long time searching.(thanks to a fine member on this forum)I have not used them and don't know that I will but i really like them.If i decide to use them I have confidence they will peform well enough for my needs.I have ESEE,Becker,Ontario, khukris, axses, tomahawks, custom blades, and many others.Too many to list.I have all this stuff because I love knives and cutting tools and i like spreading the wealth to those that are part of and support the industry.Having said all this my point is COLD STEEL makes a good product and I will continue to patronize them regardless of this video or any other.I would agree that some of the C.S. videos are over the top but one thing is for sure they are very passionate about their products.Products made for the working man for the most part. The video plainly stated that he got a new knife what more could you ask for.You can find lemons in anything.Cold Steel sells alot of knives to ol boys that can't afford some of the higher dollar blades that i have seen preform as well or somtimes better.I have seen where lots of people are not C.S fans and thats fine this is America.I am a knife fan not just a C.S fan but a knife fan.I think they do alot for the industry and I support them.If you wanna see knife failures there is an ol boy on you tube bustin them up on a regular basis and most of them don't have COLD STEEL stamped on the tang.Sorry to go so long but this post kinda hit a nerve on me.I hope everyone has a good evening.TIP.

The log is a little too big. When you baton for kindling you don’t take such big bites as this guy did. You just get medium size slivers to go from the small sticks to the bigger logs. This log should of been put on third. First really small sticks then the medium sized kindling you batoned then big logs.

I also feel the BK9 is a way better choice. I don’t get why people but stuff made over seas made of a lesser material and for the same or sometimes a little higher price. I personally am not a fan of CS. I don’t hate them but I don’t see why I would ever buy them. I am glad you guys do so we can talk about them but I will not buy one new. If I see one at a pawn shop I might if its cheap enough but I also will probably save that money for American made.

Lets stop giving our money to CS and lets bring Marble back. I am wanting a Marble Ideal in 6 or 7 inch really bad.

The guy needs to learn how to baton and not flex it sideways. Live and learn I guess.

Wow, I just watched it again and he broke that from a tip hit. The wood is just too hard for that knife. A good Estwind axe would be a good idea here......or just throw it on the fire.

I own a few Marbles knives and like them but they also make some of their stuff over seas as well.

any knife will fail under stress,i have several cold steels and never had any problems..

Not true. Some knives won't snap like that, no matter how crazily you beat on them. If my Busse FBMLE were to break at the hilt like that, even if I were beating it through a cinderblock with a sledgehammer, using a stopsign post as a cheater bar, I'd be astonished. I've batoned through logs similar to the one in the video with a $40 KaBar Cutlass, just for giggles. No worries, the knife is fine. True, the guy's technique was severely lacking, but the design of the Trailmaster is flawed. This has been discussed many times before. There are squared-shoulders at the point where the tang starts, exactly where the knife in this video snapped. That's exactly where other Trailmasters have failed before, and where they will continue to fail until either the design is corrected, or it is discontinued.

Flawed design is flawed. This has nothing to do with politics, or with how much folks may like or dislike the company. Properly-designed, hard use knives have radiused corners at the tangs to eliminate stress risers. The Trailmaster is marketed as a "hard-use" knife that can "take anything". It cannot.

I believe he got a bad blade ,stress cracks from heat treat or some other flaw it happens. This video only shows three things to me #1 way to many people are watching nutnfancy videos (what water was he displacing ?WD 40 is not a lubricant) #2 The guy taking the video needs to watch the thing a few times and get a hint on the cokehead laugh. #3 If you try(or just don`t know better) you can break anything.

LOLLLLL @ that kids laugh

If you really want a laugh start both at nearly the "same time" (the breakage one about 30 seconds later). Jim has a mellow voice and as you watch his video the kid with the hyena laugh starts up = entertainment! :D

Funny. From the video

Heavy leather gloves
WD-40
Trailmaster

All to split wood

Dang...just pack an axe.

Looks like another person poisoned by TNP's "philosophies" and so called survival methods.. bah.

Maybe CS should start Magnaflux testing their knives for these flaws. Do you think the San Mai would take more abuse??

Good post mct. Trust a man from Tennessee to introduce some down home common sense. ;)

I got my SK-5 TM for just around $100 and I've bashed it pretty hard. No probs. Its a lot of knife for the dough. Thing is you can get a really nice axe for the same amount of money. It just doesnt make sense to push your knife that hard.... unless of course you really enjoy seeing things break and posting on the internet about it.

I've never seen one of these break.

OK, good point! I actually have that same Eastwing axe, and I take it with me when CAR camping. But it is too big too awkward and too much of a single use tool to want to carry on a long hike IMHO.

...And as stated by others I've never seen something like a Busse fail from battoning either. So at least some big knives truley can handle that kind of use.

...I wonder if any laminated VG-1 TM's have failed this way before?

i wonder if cold weather making the blade very cold has a role in weakening the steel & making it a little more fragile at the hilt ?

Under the video:

**EDIT** As of 6/28/10, I received a new SK5 Trail Master from Cold Steel and a new leather sheath, completely free of charge. They stand by their products' reliability and reputation. I will post of video of my new blade soon.

Epic fail of the Coldsteel Trailmaster along the Greenwater River in the Mount Rainier State Park on June 12, 2010. Split right in half at the hilt. I have used this knife many times doing the exact same thing. This was the third log I split that day before it broke. This is a REAL Trailmaster too. I will be mailing this back to Coldsteel this week along with the video link.

Go CS Customer Service! I had a problem with a rather expensive CS knife in the past year and they sent me two more with call tags (I found the same flaw in the first 2 knives) before I even returned the ones I was finding fault with. The third time was a charm and they sent it 2nd Day Air. Never charged my card throughout. Great guys in my case anyway!

Every company has defects that get out the door at times.

That said, of the ways to damage a woods knife, the wild batoning that guy was doing might be #1.

The mandatory Cold Steel bashing troll finally rears its head. Oh well. This one seem to be a solitary one.

One example.

Cheap, outsourced labor to people in Chinese workhouse conditions, just to get us a lower bottom dollar. I don't support it. And yes, I am aware they they don't ONLY outsource to China. Viral marketing to prove their knives are capable of things that dozens of other knife companies' products are capable of doing. I don't support it. ETC.

Listen, I said I don't care about backlash, and I don't. One of the beautiful things about this forum is that we're all invited to share our opinions and be adults. I don't appreciate being a accused of being a "troll".

Troll:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."

I'd have to say that it speaks worlds if such a silly comment as mine can create any kind of emotional response. I also do believe that until now, I was on topic. Here's a newsflash: part of free speech is that those who don't agree with you are still allowed to voice their opinion. And you want to know the best part about being human? If you don't agree, you can shrug it right off. Naturally I understand that your responses are simply your half of the free speech agreement, but please don't throw accusatory terms around trying to damage my reputation on this site. I love you guys, and I appreciate the opportunity to be here. I just don't like Cold Steel's company practices, or their products. Fair?
