Cult of the peanut , members

I like the combination of blades on that AG Russell peanut.

I'm not sure if it's enough for membership to the "cult of the peanut" but I have this old Cattaraugus on the way. I like the long pull and the Roger's "Indian Trail" jigged bone that Catt used on the knives.

I see plenty of old Schrade 12OT Pal (peanuts) but not so many of the two blade 72OT Dog Leg Jack (Peanut) - saw this one for sale and bought it. OH

I always thought of those Old Timer and like knives as close cousins of the peanut. A small serpentine jack with character.

Maybe most of my peanuts aren't peanuts. I thought a peanut was a small serpentine jack.
Anyway, I applaud the generally tolerant atmosphere of this sub-forum.

I'm pretty sure this is one- it is a Case.

I always thought a Peanut was a small (under 3") serpentine jack with rounded bolsters on each end. If the bolsters are squared off on one or both ends, it's something else. For example, I have a Case Tiny Trapper which is just a bit smaller than the Peanut, but has the typical squared off bolster at the hinge end, and a rounded bolster at the other end but the frame is not exactly serpentine. Hence, it is a very small trapper pattern, not a Peanut.

Here they are, side by side:

Bottom line, if the frame doesn't look somewhat like an actual peanut, the legume, then it may be a small jack of some kind but not truly a Peanut. Just my take on it. Doesn't really matter, it's just a word. We could make it "Cult of the under 3" jack knives" if the nomenclature is a problem.

No, I agree that the Peanut is a specific Dogleg Pattern..... I was wondering if the Cult of the Peanut was open to all of the small knives though centered around the classic pattern. Though that 72OT is a little square at the end, I think it is a Peanut...... though a with a slight twist.

I like that peace nut

Thank you. I had bought a cool French frame-lock that turned out to be just not moi, and seen this on the way out. Fortunately it was still there when I went back a couple of months later in hopes of trading for it. The shackle is part of its appeal for me. And nostalgia, I suppose.

I wonder if a pen-knife thread would fly.

LGIV p185-6 says it's a collector term for a 2 3/4" round-end serpentine jack. Larger knives are called "dog-leg" jacks. Although the end bolster is round-end, the other bolster can be round or square... at least both round and square bolsters are shown as examples of "peanuts" on p186.

Not hard to find the Peace Nut for sale. Decent price too.I lived in California in the 60's. The Peace Nut rocks!

Thanks, Supra.
Rick,
Two blades. The purple covers kind of remind me of a girl (as we could say back then) from the grape boycott days.

Well, this arrived yesterday. Pretty darn sharp too. Cut myself right away

Nice looking knife, definitely an official peanut pattern. My two Rough Riders came nice and sharp right out of the box, just like yours. Hard to beat for value.
