Waiting until the last possible moment, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has vetoed Knife Rights' Gravity Knife and Switchblade Reform Bill, effectively giving the finger to New York's legislature that overwhelmingly passed the bill and the large coalition of organizations, many part of his own constituency, which supported the bill. Despite the thousands who called and emailed the Governor to sign the bill, and thanks very much for those who did so, he sided with the disingenuous arguments made by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill and District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr., virtually the only ones who opposed the bill. In vetoing this bill he has potentially doomed thousands more to arrest and prosecution for carrying common pocket knives that won't get someone arrested virtually anywhere except in New York City.

Despite Cuomo's avowed commitment to criminal justice reform in New York, this veto clearly shows the lie to that claim.

Next year's session of the New York Legislature is almost upon us and we'll be back again working to fix the state's Gravity Knife law to prevent these arrests and prosecutions. This bill passed with such large majorities in both houses of the legislature that an override of a veto is theoretically possible.

Meanwhile, our five-year-old Federal civil rights lawsuit over the constitutionality of New York City's "wrist flick" test awaits a decision which could settle the issue for certain.

Give the finger right back:

1. Override the veto
2. Bring this up when Cuomo runs for President in 2020

Thanks for the good fight, Doug.

I very much appreciate your efforts and your organization.

We the people hereby withdraw consent to be governed. As America's presidential elect has said, "You're fired."
Now it should be safe to carve an apple or cut some twine in public like a free human being. I hope its still legal to dream.

He's a typical liberal, doing his own thing with no regard, care, or concern for others and want they think. Protecting yourself from yourself.

F he government and f the law. When I was a child I couldn't understand how people lived under the tyranny of nazi Germany. Well I see how now, I truely believe we are living in an age of government tyranny. If you guys think the USA is bad you guys should try living in a commonwealth country like Canada.

Sorry for the loss, Doug. Keep fighting the good fight, we're behind you. 2017 is a new year, full of new possibilities. As a Tennessean, who can now carry whatever the hell I want to thanks to you, thanks for your efforts.

Welp, this got unhelpfully political real fast.

Mr. Ritter, your efforts are much appreciated, hoping for future victories.

To others, maybe read the rules you agreed to follow when you signed up for the site.

Como is a gun grabber and his veto on knives fits right into that characterization. His "assault weapon" law really worked. I suspect it all just reflects his general belief that people should be unarmed.

Having grown up in NYC & Bklyn.......I am NOT surprised at all.
Ugh.
Thanks to Doug for the fight!!

^ +1 Keep up the good fight!

My intentions aren't to derail this thread, but I just wanted to add that out here in California, we just lost huge ground on another front...I'm wondering if knives will be next on our Legislator's agenda?

These idiots can pass all of the self-serving laws they want; it doesn't mean "We The People," have to follow them.

And what front is that?

Big surprise there. Cuomo's "commitment to criminal justice reform" means releasing violent criminals who do not deserve a second chance, and commuting sentences for cop-killers so they can have insta-parole. All the while, disarming the law abiding New Yorkers, whether it be knife or firearm. This was lost before it got off the ground. Don't expect the NY Congress to do anything about it either.

The woman who's sentence was commuted was a member of a very large nationwide group of violent criminals .A national terrorist group.
Those events were the start in NY of interest in training for very serious defensive shooting. The two officers killed were first on the scene .Full auto weapons , bullet proof vests, well trained . Cuomo's friends !!
