All I remember is that I guessed at that time it was probably what kangaroo poo would taste like. No offense Aussie brothers.....But I've tasted my fair share for reasons we won't discuss. Lets just say spreading Vegimite on toast in the winter with a spork ain't fun.

That being said, it ended up being early and I was bolted to the back of the line. Meh.

Those crazy Aussies, it's actually pronounced Marmite, and it tastes much better when you ask for Marmite.

There was a shortage after the Christchurch earthquake, you may want to google Marmageddon to see how serious we take our spreads. :-)
 
The secret to Vegemite is to use it sparingly, just a thin layer on your toast. Hot toasted bread makes it taste a little better.

A Lebanese mate of mine many years ago introduced me to a thing they call Za-atar mixed with some sesame seeds.

You mix it with a little pure olive oil to make a non running paste and spread it over a slice of bread, then toasted. You toast it on a flat grill.

It's savory and a little salty with a very earthy wholesome type of flavor from the Za'atar, but I prefer it to most any other spread I've tasted, it's unique and delicious. I could eat half a loaf of sliced bread with it.:D
 
... and then I'd want about a quarter to half a gallon of water or coconut juice to compliment it. It's excellent with drinks, gets the old tonsils wanting a lubrication in no time. But it's really tasty if you make it right; addictive in fact, you can't stop eating it if it's made correctly.
