Current Best Steel?

I am a nerd when it comes to alloys, I always enjoy reading @Larrin articles and going through discussion threads on here regarding the latest and greatest.

But in terms of what I actually tend to use, I agree with you. I’ve got more knives in 1095 than any other steel. 1095, 420HC, O1, those are my most used steels. And when it comes to commissioning customs, I tend to request simple carbon steels. Both customs I currently have in the works are in 1095.

1095 all day!! 🍻

i am waiting for a custom blade in magnacut and I am waiting for the next magnacut drops from CRK

I think magnacut will be an excellent steel for my uses

However I don’t see the need to replace a blade I have by one in magnacut

Anything in 154cm or s30v is actually good for me :) so any better steel is a bonus.

So far m390 is my favorite steel but it is already overkill for what is do with my knives.

For a while I have chased knives ´ different steel to test them and I came to the conclusion that 1) my normal use is very basic 2) most steels, if properly done by the manufacturer, will be good for me
… my life is easier since I accepted that and I enjoy my knives better ;)

I have reduced a lot the size of my collections, but here are the steel that are still in my rotation:
1095, 14c28n, 154cm, s30v, s35vn, s45vn, Maxamet, M4, M390, 20cv

Nowadays, assuming the steel is done right, I pay more attention to the grind than to the steel

Anything with edge retention as good as S35VN, or better, is plenty good for my needs. Corrosion resistant too!
I’m enjoying my new M4 Spyderco, it does need some extra care tho, but in all fairness, I work in a kitchen and it’s been hot lately…
S35vn, Elmax and 20CV/M390 are my favorites at the moment I suppose.
I still need more time with this M4 tho, and knowing that Magnacut is close to a stainless M4, I can’t wait to try it….
The steel alone won’t “make or break” a knife purchase for me anymore, the way it used to…
Like previously mentioned, the geometry of the knife is likely going to play a bigger factor in how it performs, rather than the steel (assuming it does have decent steel to begin with). Took me a while to understand this completely, but
If you don’t believe me, buy a PM2 in any steel and watch it cut circles around most ZTs and Hinderers in 20CV (not as tough
tho obviously, which is why they make all kinds of knives) :)

Damien and I go way back.

Believe me. When it comes to 1095/80CrV2/5160, he gets the joke...
