Current Best Steel?

I’m not a fan of M390 so I would be happy for it to be replaced with several other steels. MagnaCut is a really good one.
In your analysis, CPM20CV/M390/204 were labeled 'essentially the same'. CPM makes Magnacut.

Does CPM do a better job with Magnacut than it's 20CV?

I'm sure Larrin can answer for himself, but it has nothing to do with doing a better job. They have different make-ups, different target characteristics and different strengths and weaknesses. Also, Crucible, or any foundry, only put the alloying elements together. The product they sell is then used and heat-treated etc. by the knife maker. So no, Crucible just put the ingredients together.

Both steels(and basically any comparison of two steels) have advantages and disadvantages over the other.

I like all knife steels, but I love 5160 due to toughness, sharpening, price, availability, and relative ease of heat treating.

Magnacut is really good and versatile. I will say it’s my favorite steel for sure. It might not be suited for a sword or machete though. And if sheer edge retention is your goal, Maxamet would be better. Just depends on what you need.
