Custom 124 is now available with D2, MagnaCut, and CruWear blade steel options - Officially Released on 1/24

id prefer 5160 over the d2 choice.

I dont really get the d2 choice. cpm cruwear basically is an improvement over d2 in all areas.....no good reason to have one in d2. when you have a cruwear option for a 25 buck difference.

CPM-CRUWEAR

CruWear is an air-hardening tool steel, which can achieve a Rockwell hardness of 60-65 Rc. It was made as an upgrade to D2, offering better wear resistance, much better toughness, and hardness.

Carbon (C) 1.1%, Chromium (Cr) 7.5%, Vanadium (V) 2.4%, Tungsten (W) 1.15%, Molybdenum (Mo) 1.6%.

After doing some quick reading it seems the MagnaCut is the obvious premium steel. But for practical purposes I haven’t a clue if the choices above the 420HC are worth the extra price. I guess the obvious would be “it depends”. As in what would I use it for?

I’m a new guy here and really like Buck knives. I don’t have much knowledge on different steel types. I do want to add a 124 to my meager collection. Hopefully this thread will offer some opinions from those that know knife steel types.

But as Tecate Tecate said the options are gone. For now.

I don't have any safe queens, I enjoy using/carrying all of the knives I have, but am not exactly the hardest knife user lol. Suburban dad with a mostly desk job and an occasionally camp/hike/do yard work/home projects. Like you, for some reason I get wrapped up in steel properties, when 420HC will do 101% of the things that I'd use a knife for.
 
Joking aside, I'm an engineer and really appreciate that people are out there innovating and trying to bring new, better products to market. The things I use knives for are mainly cooking and hunting, and I'm definitely happy paying more for something 5% more functional for those purposes.

I’d LOVE to have one of these in 5160. It just makes sense for this blade.
