Been awhile, hard to get back to work after the holidays.

Good to see at least one person out there shares my good taste.

Awesome work Ryan. My Ritter could use some. How is your schedule nowadays? Are you very busy in a New Year?

Wait time right now is 3-4 weeks. I'd say that's about average. I'm actually super busy but Friday is my last day at my day job and then I'm full time with the knife and home machine shop stuff, so I should have more time than usual to get orders finished.

Here's one from today.

That's awesome, congratulations to pursue your own path
I'm wondering if this would work with large griptilian and how it would feel in hand.
Anyway sent you an email to see what do you think.
I need more knives these look unbelievable

Congratulations on leaving the day job and going full time!

I have a Large Barrage that needs some CF. Any plans for a large Barrage??

Thanks

Absolutely, should have the program done sometime in February. It's the very next thing on my list, then the bugout, then I'm not sure what. Should be adding a lot more knives in the coming months though.

Been meaning to do this for awhile. G10 spacers for regular 940/943s. Sorry I don't have a more beat up set of aluminum scales to put this between. :)

Also this set came back to me to get modified to fit a 555-1. The -1s have a different pivot for some reason that requires a different size counterbore. Anyway, never saw this scale shape on a 555 and thought it looked good so I thought I'd take some pictures.

I would like some scales for my Protagonist 169 and probably the new Fact 417.

Protagonist scales in hunter orange G10 so I don't lose it. I'm guessing that I would rather have black G10 scales on the Fact. I've got a Fact pre-ordered, but I'm not generally a fan of aluminum scales.

Any possibilities on those models?

I can't say for certain right now, but I do know if I get to those they will be in line behind the barrage, buggout, 710, proper, freek and maybe a few others. Sorry I have to go with the most requested scales first.

Bunch of pictures today.
First up is some Dymalux again, full size and mini

This one came out cooler than I thought, red and black layered G10 with carbon fiber inlays and spacer

This one is probably my favorite from this week. With this combination of materials I was able to polish the wood inlay and keep the canvas micarta rough, something I can't do with carbon fiber or G10. Thinking of making one for myself.

Then we have a carbon fiber and ironwood 940 I did for my brother in law and forgot to take pictures of, so pictures aren't as good as usual since we were out somewhere, couldn't get the lighting right.

Lastly, new and improved solid backspacers for 940-1 -2 -1501, not a lot different looking than before but I improved the fit, wasn't real happy with the old version. Also... glow stuff.

Few questions as I try to decide what I am looking for in some DOAT Grip scales...

1. I like the idea of a narrower, flatter scale in terms of looks and carry, but am concerned a flat handled Grip just won't feel the same in the hand. While I don't like the way the rounded Grip scales look, sure like the way they feel using them.

For those that have made the switch, any feedback? I understand this is very subjective, but any input, particularly from people that have gone to flat DOAT scales like the Micarta or peel ply, would be appreciated.

2. As I scrolled through, I did not see any blue twill Grip scales. If they are out there or someone has some from DOAT, can we get them (re) posted?

These may require answers from DOAT, but appreciate anyone with insight...
3. Have you reconsidered doing G-10 liners with Micarta over top?

4. Able to use the ball mill chamfer on the Grip scales like you do on the Barrage scales?

5. Do you have blue or purple spool spacers for the Grip scales?

Thanks in advance all!

And just because...

1: Honestly I like the flat scales on the mini grip, but not the full size grip. The full size grip has particular issues, pivot lenght, liner screw lengths, that make it difficult to go thin enough to really create a different feel in the pocket. In the hand, it doesn't really feel thinner either because while the scales over all are thinner, they're actually thicker around the edges so you end up with a knife that doesn't feel much different in the hand either. Another thing I don't like is because the liner screws are long I can't counterbore the hole deep enough that the liner screws don't protrude very slightly. It's a little thing but it bothers me. What I really need to do is come up with a thin contour version that would be the same over thickness as my flat sets but taper slightly toward the edges, this would be the ideal solution for me and my tastes, basically just a thinner gritpilian, but it wouldn't help you and the aesthetic you're going for with the flat sides scales. The reason I never did the thin contour I wanted in the beginning was I figured everyone was buying the grip for a reason so I better not change the size and shape. Apparently that's what people want or they wouldn't buy it in the first place. I always wanted to come out with a thinner version but once I started making them I never found the time to redesign, now that I'm full time with the knife stuff, a thin contour version of the large grip is definitely on the list of things to program this year.

2: You will not find any large grips in blue twill because they only sell blue twill in 1/8 thicknesses and the large grip requires 1/4 material. Even with a liner layer underneath I can't make it work with the large grip, unless you went with the flat sided version. Unfortunately the blue twill has become ridiculously expensive as my usual vender stopped carrying it, forcing me to go elsewhere, and the prices there are crazy high... so that's a bit of a concern if that's something you're interested in.

3: I can do it... I'm willing to give it another try, I have some ideas or making it a little easier.

4: I can probably come up with something similar. it just might have to be back a little farther more like the 940, I have concerns that the chamfer might cut into the omega spring pockets if it's too far forward. I just have have to look at the depths and angles and figure out how deep I can go and where.

5: Unfotunately my spools are stainless so there's no real color options, stainless silver, black coated, I can also do copper, bronze or antique bronze for a little extra money, or a solid G10 or micarta spacer.

Did something to my hand early in the week, didn't get many sets done this week. I was milling stuff but sanding and polishing was out. Managed to get this set done though. Black G10 with dark blue ctek. This is for a -1 so it will have blue spools too, wish I had some for the pictures. This is the bead blasted finish which I like. Frosted glass look on the ctek, lots of grip on the G10.

Thank you for the thorough and honest answer. I need to go through some pictures again and try to visualize what I want to request. I will be in touch.

I don't recall reading in the thread, do the Grip scales get hollowed out on the backside, or are they solid slab? I am thinking G10 liner with canvas micarta over the top if that makes a difference. Trying to envision weight difference (understanding pretty much anything will be heavier over the standard Grip nylon or G10 scales).

Yeah I don't hollow out anything on the back of the G10 scales. There's really not a enough room anywhere that you could remove enough G10 and still have be solid that it would make a very noticeable difference, it being so light to start with. I kind of wanted them to be super solid to remove that lack of quality feeling the hollow stock scales have. There really isn't any lack of of quality there, it just feels that way because they're hollow.

Here's a few from this week.
