Custom bushcraft knife

Gotcha Brian! How come your 'green light dot' is'nt showing you're onboard tonight, yet you're posting right along with us? Was going to shoot you an email...

You too can be "imbisable".........;)

Go to your user CP and click "edit options, and use invisible mode" IIRC.

Also..... Brian is a Ninja.

I keep letting this one out of the bag.

That is a sweet looking knife! I keep asking myself if I should get one of these or the Pathfinder...

Here this will help...or make you broke by getting all.

I like this shot. You got the original 5"-4" and 4.25"

Get the Kelly knife. It is just awsome and I can make them up in a couple of days.

That was the first mention of the name of the knife do you realize that? Well besides the original 5" you posted. I was doing so good keeping it a secret.:D

I have only recently discovered the joys of bushcraft-style knives, so I am reading all of this with keen interest.

I have a Mora that I really haven't put through it's paces yet, but I do like the pattern.

I am planning on getting a Koster. I haven't yet decided on ordering a bushcraft, or holding out for a bushmaster. I have plenty of time to decide while the funds replenish, though.

I've got a Barkie Snowy River (Not really a bushcraft, but...) on the way that I couldn't afford, but couldn't afford not to get at the price they were asking.

Riddleofsteel- I love your Marsh! How is that ivory micarta finished? It looks in the picture like the perfect texture for a beautiful user.

Love all the thoughts and info, guys. Cybrok, thanks for bringing this up!

But ROS, the Aurora and Nebula are made of 2 very different types of steel IMO. The Aurora being made in A2 high carbon steel, and the Nebula in more Stainless like 12C27 if I'm not mistaken. The difference in weathering would be apparent in side by side usage due to SS's lower carbon content, which also makes the knife more 'brittle' in some respects. Not trying to divert the thread, but thought it was worth noting on these 2 models mentioned.

One of the things that Mike Stewart has done at bark river is to heat treat 12C27 in such a way as it performs like A2 but resists rust like a stainless. As far as my uses so far I can not tell a significant difference between the two in edge holding, edge rolling, or chipping of the blade edge. The main difference I see between the knives is that the Nebula will not fire off a spark when scraped against native flint.
Mike uses a blade almost identical to the Nebula of his Wet Environment military knife. It is his response to the call for a rust resistant Bravo-1. If brittleness was a real problem I doubt special wet environment military units would use them for long.

Thanks for the kind words on my Stewart Marsh knife. The finish of the Micarta is somewhat textured without being bead or sand blasted. Easy on the hands under heavy use but still tacky. We have been down many atrail together.

there were so many makers of bushcraft knives out there.:thumbup:I did have it narrowed down to a Koster bushcraft or Gossman PSK SR. but it's hard to buy a knife without holding it first.I know Koster will make the handle to fit the customers hand..to me that's a plus. The Gossman just looks uncomfortable but again without "playing" with it? Are most of these knives in the same price range? You guys that own the Gossman and the Koster is one more comfortable than the other..and I know we all have our own "feel" for this? :D Then it's the scandi grin OR convex? O1 or stainless? Now I see why it's best to get one of each......

True. And they all do great work. It's so hard to choose.

Are barkies considered production or semi-production? Because from what I saw in the last day, I think I'll have to add the Fox River to my list.

So from now my top choices would be:

Fiddleback Nessmuk
BRK&T Fox River
Something by ML knives
NWA forum knife

I saw Ariel Salaverria's San Mai nessie, but the waiting list is SO long. I guess my choice will depend of the price and availability. Who knows what can happen. Sometimes Dan Koster just feels like putting a great knife and a crazy price. Or Justin at Rangers prepare some special stuff for Blade. When I'll be ready to order, I will for sure try to spot a deal in the knifemaker's for sale section or the Custom for sale section. It will not be a custom made for me, but a deal is a deal :)

Keep them coming guys, my choice isn't stopped yet.

By the way, if it can help, I have small musician hands, not big paws.
