Custom Detail

Terrific work, Caleb! Lighting, composition, focus - just pulls you right in. You certainly chose a terrific subject for this series too - not a lot of knives could hold up to that level of scrutiny!

Hello Caleb!

Congratulations on a very nice set! I for one really like strong light and selective DOF most of the time, so I am really drawn to your detail shots.

One thing I am wondering though, is if I might actually like them even more, if you employed focus stacking (or to a greater extent) to max out DOF in all closeups. I am thinking about the edge closeup for example, where the point of focus to me is not where I would want/expect to see the point of main interest as well (the blade pattern).

Hope to see more of your great shots in the future!

Best regards,
Alex

Refreshing approach you have taken. GREAT work. If I ever make a knife I need photographed I'm going to send it to you.

Very impressive.

It was a pleasure to see

Thanks for posting

Amazing work I know how hard it is to get detail and color like that
Blue handles are not easy to capture.

An man that knife is absolutely stunning. My favorite of yours actually.

Such a beautiful Fighter and beautiful images I find myself coming back to this thread multiple times. So in case I'm not the only one, thought I would bring it back to the first page to make it easier to find. ;)

You Darn Homeschoolers... Is there anything you cant do?
Beautiful work Caleb and of course, fantastic subject matter.
Does this mean that you will be accepting photography work for other makers?
How are you at photoshopping out major flaws? :)
Adam.

Caleb, you and your brother's eye for detail is exceptional. I really like the darker tone to the pics with the little shimmers of light bringing out the perfectly crafted accents.

Great photos! Stunning is right. Some of the intricate details in the last few photos remind me of fractals, (see google images).

a mixture between jaw dropping, excellence, beautiful, and stunning. No words to nail it.

Excellent work! I really enjoy the strong key lighting and control over DOF. But more so your composition is excellent. In automotive detail photography, they always talk about find the details that will make a fan recognize it without seeing the whole car. You do that very well, even though it is tough with a knife.

Wow, thank you guys! You're all super encouraging! I'm so glad you like the photos and the Kyle's awesome knife!

Thank you, Alex! Focus stacking would help I think, that's a great idea, however, I decided not to go that route because I've never shot macro images like that before so I wanted to be very mobile and shoot as many angles as I could. I actually shot over 700 images. So they would've been more clear if I had used a tripod and focus stacking but I wouldn't have been able to experiment with so many angles without spending a lot more time with the knife. I spent an entire day shooting already. I think there're pros and cons to each approach. Next time I'll try going for more clarity using a tripod and focus stacking.

Thanks, Mr. Jones!

Thank you, Adam! I'm sure there's something we can't do, I'll let you know when I find it. ;)
Yes, I am accepting knives to be photographed from anyone and everyone. Hopefully I'll be set up at a knife show soon as well.
I would consider myself pretty good at removing flaws using photoshop but I have never used my skills in that way, it would be deceptive I think. I only enhance what's already in a knife and occasionally make flaws less noticeable but never remove them completely. My goal in editing is to try and make the knife look like it did when I was holding it in my hands.

For those of us who are still new to the knife world and haven't had the opportunity to ever examine a knife like this you have provided a wonderful education. You have revealed so many details that I have never seen before. Thank you.

WOW, Unbelievable use of light and crystal clear! Keep posting

Love the detail shots Caleb, and the knife itself is absolutely superb. Thanks for the visual treat.
