I would recommend using acetone or isopropyl rather than mineral spirits. Mineral spirits are a mixture of turpentines which is great if you are removing waxes or heavy oils. But it's not a performance product and will have some other hydrocarbons in it. The spots in your finish are likely due to those hydrocarbons inhibiting the corrosion. But it does look cool.
