Custom karda/chakmak

Thanks, y'all. The paste is for tempering, not hardening- easiest way to diff. harden is with an acetylene torch- clay is tricky in my experience. My mix for claying blades is clay, chopped straw and ground charcoal.
Thanks again for your kind words.

JW, your work looks great. Have you considered upgrading to a maker membership? Lots of potential customers here at bfc:)

Glad you mentioned it- I have been for two years but I always forget to change it in the control panel. Karda reminded me too. Not super tech-literate, me...

Cool! Do you even need to temper the Chakmak other than the tang maybe? Is this where you would use the clay on the entire blade area and lightly temper the tang from the back? Since there is no edge I suppose you could just watch the color until it goes purple just to the choil. Thanks for posting this! Very interesting!

Here they are ground, ready for hardening. Going to temper the squared edge of the chakmak back to dark straw or so- still work for striking ferrocerium but tough enough too. Not going to draw the burnishing edge at all- clamp it in the post vise as a heat sink.image.jpg
This is why i didn't finish the K&C...this one has been in my head for a couple days and needed OUT. Lol

Drool. I like the continuous curve of the Kukri. Its also looking fast and still has a belly for chopping. Whats best is that the tip seems to point more down than usual, just how I would prefer it. Four thumbs up.

That one looks like a hanshe. For example: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/img1480lg.jpg/

Man that is awesome! I like that way you turned the end of the handle down. What is the weight on that one if you dont mind me askin? Has a nice drop to it!

Ndog-12oz, if you can believe it- distal taper from 5/16 or so to 1/8. Not a utility chopper but faaaast-
Hanshees handle kinda weird- I almost nailed myself with it doing drills last night.
Jens- it's only an 1-1/2" wide at the widest. It feels kinda delicate in hand.
Going to do some cutting tomorrow or monday- we'll see how it does.

12 oz! Wow! I cant even imagine that! I Have a snake knife by Bura which is something like a Kumar Kobra. It is 15 inches and 12.5 Oz and yours is 20"? I have many Khuks but I always wondered how something with that much drop would handle. I just cant wrap it in my brain yet.

It's 11-1/2" or so in the blade and maybe 6" hilt tops, so more like 17".
( can't afford a ghopte balance custom yet, and suffering from poor impulse control...)
Should have the handles on the K & C by this evening, if todays plumbing project doesn't go agley.

Very interesting work, thanks for sharing.
I like the design of the karda and chakma.

Someday I plan on making a tool set for my favorite and most used 17 3/4" WW II Bura. As an amature embellisher my plan called for either matching handles in wood or antler tips, a small scandi, a ferrocerium rod, a SAK Farmer sized wood saw, maybe a hacksaw blade, a good pair of tweezers, not sure the ear pick yet.

I love the idea of the ferrocerrium rod-i've also thought about cutting a dmt diamond plate (the thin credit card sized ones) into strips 1/2" wide and hilting it like a chakmak. I'd love to see the set when you're done!

Those DMT credit card pieces are way cool! I had a set but they burned with my house tho. Ive seen they have another type that may work even better for tighter recurved areas of the Khuk. They are called "DMT Dia-Sharp Diamond Mini-Hone Sharpeners". Check them out! They sound perfect for what your talking about. You could pop them from the handle and make a new cool one! Great idea!!!
