In inspiration of Brian Andrew and Pitdog's camp knife Idea, WS&S will be having a custom machete/golok/parang/barong/ you name it contest for any maker who is interested. Readers are advised to let makers know of this contest if you think they would be a good candidate for it. We want the makers perfect machete...design, materials, thickness etc, and we want neat designs! (as per the camp knife contest!) Please post a work in progress pictures in the WIP thread that will be put up later. These must be custom machetes IE: not modified from a previous machete.

Our very own Horn Dog will be taking care of the majority of the contest with my help. At the end of his evaluation, he will be sending the machetes to me for a video review.

Machete specs: 12" to 28" long blade, capable of what the maker thinks a machete is used for.

Dead line: February 15th -this way it gets you through the holidays.

All Machetes will be returned to the makers, but they must provide and pay for a return shipping label. (that stuff would get expensive for us!)

GO!

Sounds like fun! Too bad I don't have a leg to stand on:foot: or I'd wanna get in on this!

Don't forget my beloved bolos, please. I really want to see what our makers come up with.

Bring on the bolos, seriously, anything you think works like a machete or has been a type of machete at some point. Don't get into the "is it a sword or is it a machete" thing folks! You know the difference and can incorporate that knowledge into your design. Use thy common knifey sense!

This will be interesting. I have a few and I've always loved when someone modifies theirs!

Just to clarify for some folks, Joe. Is this contest just for newly made machetes only, or is it including whatever old machete-like steel folks may have laying about? I thought this was only for newly made stuff, but I've been wrong in the past.

honestly I can't think of too many machetes off the top of my head, so I don't think it matters. If it were something like a 5 inch knife, it may make a difference but not in this case . What were you thinking Dawson?

I was thinking that, since it wasn't explicitly stated, that some people might see the thread and think it was a contest that included manufactured or modded machetes that they may already have. As I understood it, this is to be a contest/challenge for makers to come up with new and exciting blades— not for people to show off what they already have.

Just thought you might have wanted to state the ground rules, that's all.

Sorry for the confusion, Joe.

I thought that made it clear, if not, let me know!

I thought I had posted a response to this, but apparently it didn't take. In the one I thought I had posted, I apologized for having missed where you said "These must be custom machetes IE: not modified from a previous machete."

I just wanted to make it clear that this was for custom machetes, not realizing that you already had.

noooooo problem.

though a modified machete contest in the future could be cool, depending on how this one turns out.

That would certainly be interesting, too. I just like machetes, even though I only own a few. Nevertheless, I like seeing them and one of these days I'll see another one I just can't live without.

This is exciting. When you knife makers are ready to ship, please contact me. I will give all the machetes a fair testing. I will keep them all until all have been tested so I can go back and compare them in various machete tasks back to back. Sometimes that makes a difference. Then they are off to Joe for exciting action video shots! :D

I'll see if I can come with something worthy and profile/grind it later tonight. Sounds fun. Just to check. I can use any steel right?
