Custom or louder pipes for my scooter...

Then you have mufflers for cars like the Dynomax Ultra Flos- Great flowing muffler that muffles, yet lets the growl out under WOT

Sorry to resurrect and old thread. However I am currently looking into buying a drifter. How has your drifter worked out for you? Any know issues? Have you bought the louder pipes? Did they improve mileage/performance?

Hi T. Erdelyi-

Loud pipes get you noticed...but for all the WRONG reasons. I've been in my car on the highway with family, behind a biker with straight pipes, and I've had difficulty hearing conversations inside my own car because of the outside noise.

Even as a fellow motorcyclist, I feel the frustration building inside me and I will do virtually anything to get past the biker to regain some peace. I'm an extremely laid-back personality and I absolutely love looking at all sorts of bikes...so could you imagine the unrestrained anger that is generated inside someone who doesn't particularly like motorcycles in the first place? That person might do something dangerous like pass on the right to escape the racket...actually causing an unsafe condition on the highway due to the loud pipes.

Threats to motorcylists typically come from in front of us, not the rear. Left-turning cars who don't "see" us, vehicles entering from sidestreets, etc. Find innovative ways to protect yourself from those threats and you're doing yourself a favor...not to mention being an ambassador for motorcycling by operating a quiet machine.

too bad if you dont like my loud pipes.they are legal and if they are too loud for you then either travel on a different road or travel at a different speed. I dont care whether they make for a safer ride or not .that is what my howards air horns and lots of lights and my awareness are for , I run my loud pipes because I like them,I enjoy the noise, you would be surprised how many of the older folks in our neighborhood have commented how they like the sound of the pipes too. In short unless my pipes become illegal they are staying and in my opinion those who would use them as an excuse for not being a "bike ambassador" would only find some other excuse to legislate or otherwise exclude anything they unwilling to accept.that being said I do not go out of my way to "rack my pipes" to try and create extra noise nor do I go around trying to be "bad boy biker" trying to intimidate others and riding foolishly.I guess I'm tired of people who dont understand that if they do not like something I am Doing ,so long as it is not illegal immoral or just plain rude, then go somewhere else if my pipes bother you so much.

Guys,

Just brought this thread up to hear about the drifter, not get into anything about loud versus quiet.

I have to disagree with you. a difference of opinion between us should not warrant the label of selfish nor a$$hat. you sir have the right to attach any legal exhaust etc to your chosen vehicle as do I .again my exercising my legal and moral right to pursue happiness does not make me selfish nor an a$$hat

What exhaust is it? If it's not the stock exhaust, it is probably not legal. As far as I know, there is not a single cruiser aftermarket pipe that is EPA legal, and none that are California legal. Harley has, or is going to stop selling their "Screaming Eagle" line of pipes because they see the writing on the wall and loud pipes lead to anti-motorcycle legislation.

Thank you for being representative of a typical Harley rider.

You're very welcome,I usually find myself in excellent company among both family and friends.I work in a cardiac cath lab and all of my coworkers like my pipes. There is an interventional radiologist that comes to work in our lab that also has a large dresser like mine and one of the pacemaker company reps that come to our lab rides a harley also. The cardiologist that I work with the most wanted as his birthday gift a ride on my bike. In my hometown most of the guys I ride with on the weekends are members of U.S. border patrol or customs agents, although one of the seargents on the police force joins us when he can. as far as family goes one is an executive with a cleaning supply company, one is head of security for a state hospital another is a welder with his own company(learned to weld in the U.S.M.C).Many people do not realize that the day of the "dirty shirt biker"is long gone since you have to have around $20,000.00just to play.Yes ,I do consider myself to be a representative harley rider,I go to church, pay my taxes ,go to work, take care of business, and have fun riding my bike every day that I can .and rest assured I thank God for all my blessings for letting me live in a country where I can have loud pipes if I want;)

I am running fishtails with baffles made by samson exhast purchased from J.P Cycle company.I dont know if I would get a ticket in california But here in Texas and New Mexico and on my sturgis trip I had no problems with any L.E.

Samsons are not legal, baffles or not. Just because you have never been ticketed, doesn't mean you are legal.

Dont' get me wrong, I like the sound of a nice running bike, but keep in mind, being inconsiderate to the rest of society (like the asshat that lives a street over from me who runs his Harley at redline at 2AM when he gets home from the bar...) will lead to bad things will happening to all of us who ride.

Bikes and cars - a loud horn is a good thing and I have fitted some to most vehicles I've owned. Most stock horns are feeble. Nice pair of air horns gets attention fast - much better than gunning the throttle.
Some of the high-end Citroens had speed sensitive horns. Two sets, a peep peep thing at low speeds for round town and air horns at higher speed.

Wise teaching from my early days of biking, "don't assume they have seen you, don't assume they haven't seen you, assume they have seen you and want to kill you".

Hi All-

Harleyvato, continue riding your motorcycle on public roads with loud pipes at all hours of the day and night to annoy innocent people and see what that gets us. You don't help the sport of motorcycling, you hurt it. People who share your myopic beliefs will cause legislation to be passed against us as sure as sunrise.

C'mon, you're not even a motorcyclist, are you? Someone this damaging to our beloved hobby has got to be a troll.

I'm interested in the Drifter info too. I see that the Drifter 1500 (or was it 1600?) is discontinued. And although the Drifter 800 is still available, the Vulcan 800 Classic has been replaced by the 900 Classic. That leads me to believe that the entire line of 800cc bikes will be "upgraded" before 2008, when the new emissions standards take effect. Anyone have any info about the Drifter's future?

------------------------------

A bit more about obnoxious riders on loud bikes:
Maybe not In boise But Here they are All that is repuired is a baffle .
The anti-tampering regulations are set by the Federal government. I doesn't matter what state you're in. The reg, as it appears in every MOM:
Tampering With Noise Control System Prohibited
Federal law prohibits the following acts or the causing thereof:
(1) The removal or rendering inoperative by any person, other than
for purposes of maintenance, repair, or replacement, of any device or
element of design incorporated into any new vehicle for the purpose of
noise control prior to its sale or delivery to the ultimate purchaser or
while it is in use; or (2) the use of the vehicle after such device or
element of design has been removed or rendered inoperative by any
person.

One bit of news that's developed since this topic went around the first time, riders with illegal exhaust systems are actually more likely to be involved in a serious accident. Is it a reflection on the type of person who rides with illegal pipes? A statistical fluke? Or perhaps the effect of loud noise on surrounding motorists? No one knows at this point, but it's an interesting topic for further study.

I'd also like to counter some of the previous brand-bashing with this:
Harley-Davidson's current stance actually puts it on the cutting edge of corporate responsibility regarding exhaust-noise. It is the only company that has both taken an anti-noise stance and offers street-legal accessory exhaust systems as an alternative to loud aftermarket pipes.

You're no better than the inconsiderate morons who play their stereos at unreasonably loud sound levels. I hope you get the pleasure of living nearby others who share, and actively participate in your freedom of noise making doctrine.

Although my vintage road bikes make little or no noise (a 1982 Miyata and a 1981 Cilo), this thread has inspired me to buy some clamp clothespins and baseball cards...

Please rest assured that I will continue to ride on public roads at any time I please, I have paid my taxes for the right to do so,that being said,my bedtime is around 9:30 since I have to work early so I am not out a ll hours of the night and when I am on call and do get called in I take one of my four wheel vehicles, both to not wake up the neighbors and the fact that I have to pull the bike out of the garage, take the time to warm it up,etc. Yes I own a 1993 flhs electraglide that is my and my wifes vacation getaway ride I also own a 1942 45 cu. in. flathead trike that I am slowly working on(admittedly my learning curve needs some growing in this area) FinallyI dont consider My beliefs myopic ,just different from yours in this area ,btw what do you ride?
