Custom or louder pipes for my scooter...

You're no better than the inconsiderate morons who play their stereos at unreasonably loud sound levels. I hope you get the pleasure of living nearby others who share, and actively participate in your freedom of noise making doctrine.

Actually you are in no position to evaluate what level of quality I have attained in myself, you sir do not know me,nor I you .Just because we disagree on a subject does'nt make me inconsiderate nor a moron. On the other point the residential neighborhood I live in is a series of cul-de-sacs that regurlarly have get togethers that all age groups attended kids, parents, olderfolks etc.there is no drunkedness or anything other than people getting together and sharing a good time visiting, playing games etc.

I'm interested in the Drifter info too. I see that the Drifter 1500 (or was it 1600?) is discontinued. And although the Drifter 800 is still available, the Vulcan 800 Classic has been replaced by the 900 Classic. That leads me to believe that the entire line of 800cc bikes will be "upgraded" before 2008, when the new emissions standards take effect. Anyone have any info about the Drifter's future?

A bit more about obnoxious riders on loud bikes:
The anti-tampering regulations are set by the Federal government. I doesn't matter what state you're in. The reg, as it appears in every MOM:

One bit of news that's developed since this topic went around the first time, riders with illegal exhaust systems are actually more likely to be involved in a serious accident. Is it a reflection on the type of person who rides with illegal pipes? A statistical fluke? Or perhaps the effect of loud noise on surrounding motorists? No one knows at this point, but it's an interesting topic for further study.

I'd also like to counter some of the previous brand-bashing with this:

I stand corrected. I don't know if there is some legal loophole that allows samson and j&p cycle to sell the systems they do. You have raised my curiosity, now I'll have to some research. Thanks

I don't know if there is some legal loophole that allows samson and j&p cycle to sell the systems they do.
Some of the aftermarket pipe manufacturers mark their products "Not for street use," but most don't bother. There is no law against manufacturing or selling loud exhaust systems, only against using them on public roads.

However, enforcement on the supply-side may be improving. Here's an article from the viewpoint of bike shop owners:
http://www.bikernet.com/news/PageViewer.asp?PageID=711
The short version, bike shops have been illegally modifying street vehicles since 1979, even to the point that an entire industry has evolved around the practices. Now they (the bike shops) are concerned someone may finally start enforcing the law. The catalyst for the feared upcoming crack-down, noise complaints.
Unfortunately, many shop owners that we’ve talked with still do not realize what is going on. Many believe the EPA and state governments will not enforce the new laws, like they didn’t enforce the old laws, and it will be “business as usual.” However, if enforcement is ratcheted up, especially in response to noise complaints, the resulting penalties may be the financial ruin of the smaller shops, manufacturers, and bike builders in the motorcycle aftermarket industry.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

We took off the stock 2003 Fat Boy pipes, and put on a set of Vance & Hines, and the bike sounds so much better. I have White Brother pipes on my 01 FXDX. They sound great and are a nice balance, not too loud, but not too quiet either.

I admit that all this is a bit of a sore point with me. Here in Missouri, there appears to be little or no enforcement of the state statute that simply says, "All motor vehicles shall be equipped with a muffler that silences the exhaust noise to the maximum extent possible."

This seems rather clear, anything other than factory stock is de facto illegal. However, there are no standards, and no provision for testing during the safety inspection. As long as the exhaust system is visually sound, it's liable to pass. And of course, it's no huge trick to bring the bike in with the stock exhaust system and then swap it out after the inspection...

I see these guys (and not to be particularly predjudiced, but almost invariably Harley riders) with exhaust systems where each firing cycle of the piston sounds like a 12-guage shotgun blast, and under accelleration these things will rattle your eardrums from over 100 yards.
The idea that this is for "safety" is a marvelous conceit....

My last roadster was a 1973 Suzuki two-stroke triple. I once pulled up next to a guy in a car who leaned out the window and said, "boy, that sure is a quiet bike!"

This thread reminds me of why I rarely post here anymore...
The thread was about louder pipes and automatically people assume we're firing off 155 howitzers.
And then, people start assuming that everyone on a bike is a menace...
And then, people start talking about legality...
And then everyone starts with the attitude that their own convenience and happiness trumps everyone else's

how about this.. if you got nothing nice to say, don't say nothing...

Hi All-

My pristine 1992 Honda CBR 600F2 has the stock pipe and engine coupled with a very modified front and rear suspension. If I could find a way for it to run completely silent and simultaneously make the same horsepower I would be all over that technology! Naturally, the horn and associated electricals have been upgraded and I ride with the safest, most durable gear that can be purchased.

MelancholyMutt, sorry you weren't pleased with the thread.

BlueJay, nothing to be sorry about, I'm just disappointed at the lack of common respect people have for one another...

Hope we can keep this outta W&C...

Vance & Hines pipes are indeed the best for sound. Personally, I like a deep rumble. What I don't like is that "brap" type exhaust, where you hear and feel every brassy explosion of the cylinder(s).

I have a 71 Nova that has Dynomax Bullet mufflers on it...they do actually muffle...a little...but they give me that deep rumble when driving around town...now, when I have to get up and go, they can be a bit loud..and they do attract attention, for better or for worse. But they are much easier on the ears than straight headers.

Neighbor down the way has a Suzuki 650 with either straight pipes...or very little baffle. The lil' ole lady on the porch next door nearly falls out of her chair when he starts it up. It seriously sounds like a small bomb going off.

That, and "fart can" mufflers drive me crazy....:p

i used to love the old 2 stroke kawasaki 500 & 750 triples with chambers and no silencers, sound great to me. if ya think a harley is loud ya outta hear one of these babys lol.

i imagine if the authorities wanted to actually do something about loud pipes/mufflers they would do it during yearly inspections, i suppose ya could add/remove baffles as neccesary though, most LEOs are too busy with criminal issues to worry much about loud pipes though, i know a few LEOs who drive harleys WITH loud pipes FWIW.

doesnt bother me i'm deaf anyway, or almost anyway lol, all those loud pipes in my youth.
