Custom Tactical Folders?

Hey Goat....Surprise.

SG whether you like it or not there are others with vastly superior knowledge of subject matter that you may have an interested in. That goes for everyone including myself. To ignore such knowledge that has only been gained through decades of study of a subject matter is foolish. It is people like you who when someone gives an opinion contrary to theirs feel ii is necessary to use a phrase similar to: "Oh yeah...what makes you such an expert."

In my case you don't have to waste time pondering that....you already know.

Personally, I always seek out subject matter experts in areas I'm interested in. I find it saves time, resources and usually money.

By all means continue to use the ignore button.

Good God, Goat! Don't be an idiot. It does no good to use the ignore button on Les Robertson. I've had him on and off ignore twice, but I just keep comin' back for more. He knows too much to ignore, and besides, every time we argue, I end up later on, liking him even more than before.

these threads are communal experiences, and there is much to be learned from them when your mind is open to more than just looking at pretty pictures.

Adam, is that timascus Cobra a frame lock or liner lock and does it have a clip? How about a picture of the other side.

I thought this was a picture tread ;)

hi Austin Guy,

Many of the posters mean well and have posted some great photos. Tactical Folder is a marketing term that signifies a particular "Look". It is not signifying a "combat" or some kind of knife carried by military people. Just to clarify since you asked about Tactical Folders.

Tactical Folders do not have the following:

Natural Handle materials
Damascus anything
Mirror polished blades.

Moki-Ti and Super Collider materials are starting to show up on a lot of "Tactical" folders. I think a new category needs to be named. I will call it "P-Tac's".

If you are coming to the Blade Show I encourage you (or anyone else) to stop by the seminar I will be conducting called "What to look for in a tactical folder".

Folders with Damascus blades are called....Damascus Folders.

Folders with Natural handle material/mirror finishes....Presentation Folders

Really fancy folders with file work, inlays, etc. Art Folders.

I keep repeating this (for the last 10 years or so) as when I judge the custom knives for the awards at the Blade Show...makers still put knives in the above 3 categories into the tactical folder market. Generally walking right by all the other knives (that look like the one they have) to put it in the wrong category. Then again there are makers who will take the same style of knife and put it in the Presentation, Tactical and Art knife categories. I guess they don't really know what they have so they will take a chance! LOL

Yes, necromancy. Sorry, but with the article by Les on pages 12-16 of this month's Blade Magazine, I thought this thread should be revisited.

Is a hybrid tactical Folder a type of tactical folder? If not, is inclusion of the word "tactical" in that name misleading? Because of the six tactical folders shown in that article, three of them have Damascus blades - two of them with Damascus blades are specifically captioned as "tactical folders" with no mention of "hybrid."

Can tactical folders now have Damascus blades? If so, when did that happen?

It is all pretty confusing.

Well more than three years later, do we have any clearer understanding or better agreement on this subject?

I've always felt that tactical folders are identified by their look, period. Supreme Court Justice Stewart once famously said that while he could not readily define the term “hard-core” pornography, he said “ but I know it when I see it.” Ditto with tacticals. And whoever suggested that Damascus-bladed folders are not to be classified as tactical, given the "tactical" look", didn't take a good enough look at the images below when posted a few months ago:

Matt,

Les is long gone.

Don, None of your folders impressed me as much as the first one does, just beyond words.

Doug

As in... not living?

And no offense, but I find almost all "art knives" fugly.

As in . . .

See Les' post above? See underneath his name where it says "Banned."

Long gone.

To give us all a baseline, would you post up some examples of tactical knives that you find "fpretty?" TIA!

Oops.

As far as my standards of beauty, almost every Emerson custom would set my standard.
