Cutco/Kabar outdoorsman. Becker influenced? *update*

shame Ethan won't see a penny for this

OR WILL HE?

really nice working profile. Stainless doesn't bother me, but the price and hollow grind does.

It is overpriced. I had a chance to fondle one of these recently, via a Cutco rep. The ergo's are pretty good, and the handle design did remind me a lot of a Tweener. It's well built, however, I did not agree with the choice of steel. But to be fair, I really think Cutco designed, built and markets this knife to the glamping (Glamor Camping) crowd. In that regard, I think Cutco did good.

Thing is, that knife is probably a pretty good performer, but, unless I get one in hand for a substantially cheaper price, then I'll never really know.

I truly have a hard time understanding what they could possibly have been thinking, bringing out this knife. I think their marketing staff should be fired! I mean...WTF???

Well, if that be the case they should fire the guy who said, "Hey lets totally copy the 1217, stamp in CUTCO, and put zombie green handles on it.":D

It's a very smart marketing idea, bringing a solid design to a new market. Just like the zombie-green 1217. It doesn't take anything away from their existing market or reputation. They probably have some crazy idea about selling more knives to more people... that's sort of how running a business works... ;)

440A (much like 420HC, as used by Buck) takes a lot of guff, but it's really not a "bad" steel at all. We only perceive it as such because we're spoiled by newer, better alloys like CPM-154 and S35VN.

I too would like to see it either at a lower price-point or made with a better steel... but I was not consulted on that matter (mainly because the people at CutCo never heard of me :p )

I really do like the blade and handle designs. If it was made of S35VN at 58Rc or so (which we know CutCo/Ka-Bar can do) for around $150 on the street, I'd be on it like white on rice.

I've successfully run several business before retirement, but I guess I'd never make in today's world of jumping on every trendy product idea which comes along. Making a profit isn't enough for me. I have to feel like my product has some sort of intrinsic value. Bringing out a copy of an already successful knife in an inferior steel, or painting it zombie green, just doesn't...umm...cut it for me. LOL

YMMV

Who knows what will sell and what won't? This thing may be a huge hit or a giant flop, I really have no idea. The BK-5 and BK-15 are two of my favorite designs around, but we're told they're not going to make any more because not enough people are buying them. *shrug*

Then again I seem to be the only person I know who actually uses and likes the Zomstro (zombie green or not)... so what do I know :p

"The BK-5 and BK-15 are two of my favorite designs around" Mine as well. That said, if you like the Zomstro, you should seriously consider seeking the help of mental health care professionals. :D

Isn't 440A the stuff they started using on China blades because it is so soft they can get a lot more blades from their tooling? I've never seen a 440A that would hold an edge as well as 440C or any of the better steels used in knife production. Since this looks more like a kitchen knife and most of them have soft steel (so they can be sharpened quickly) that may be part of the reason they used such a soft steel. That and making a lot more money per blade.

I personally will not buy a knife with 440A.

You are not the first person to advise me to seek that sort of health-care. :D

The Zomstro I have was given to me at the first Beckerhead Gathering I attended, by none other than Ethan Becker himself. He came up to me and asked, "You like big knives?"

"Well, yeah!"

"Here, take this."

Quite honestly I thought it was the most ridiculous knife-shaped-object I'd ever seen... but in the interest of not being an ungrateful jerk, I didn't say so out loud.

Then I brought it home, set aside my prejudices, and started cutting stuff with it. It's weird, but it works.

How uber cool! Even I would use that knife if it was personally given to me by Ethan Becker!

and what about Hunt's modded zomstro? that's a sweet blade!
