Cutting a burl into Knife Handle Blocks - Step by Step

i get it now. it's a lot like cuting up a large decorative piece of rock or mineral (geologist here.) it depends on which face that has a good texture and pattern.

Cutting a burl would be like cutting a piece of malachite. One way you get the orbs, another way you get wavy lines.

A lot like that. The malachite example was dead-on. Burls are very close to being botryoidal in nature.

P.S. I just spent the evening at a geophysicist's party. Boy do they make fun of geologists.

i'm from the other side, geophysicists catch a lot more (they're outnumbered.)

has anyone made a handle from chalcedony?

Photobucket really screwed up this thread, I recently got a bunch of burls to make knife scales out of and I have no idea where to start.

Yah....I read this thread when it had pictures and it was a very helpful thread. Got me cutting my own burl blocks and sending them off to K&G
