Yes! Finally! I was able to cut a unsupported hair in half with my 940-1 in s90v.

Proof
https://youtu.be/RW0V4bty6-8

It was sharpened freehand using the worksharp guided sharpening system without the base.
And finished on a 0.5 cbn compound on leather.

What a challenge. S90v is not just a bear to sharpen because of its lack of grindablity but also how unforgiving it is to any deviations in angles.

If the apex isn't solid from grinding a burr on each side with a coarse stone then forget about it.

Also it's nerve racking because any variation in angle moving up in grit means your back at square one.

But its so worth it to challenge yourself and to be rewarded with a fine edge that is insanely aggressive.
High vanadium = high enjoyment

I have been doing the same thing with my ZT 560 in elmax. I know exactly what you mean with having to go back to square one if you put too much pressure. Right now I'm working on it at a 14.5 DPS and trying to get to HHT 5 level. It was at a HHT4 with a hand convex edge polished to .01my cbn paste
Love the video and the knife...shawaam..lol

Btw...stick a really bright flashlight on the ground shinning up at the ceiling under the hair and knife blade. The hair will show up better that way. It took me 8 tries to get a decent video of it
And technicaly, that is the wrong way to cut the hair, albeit, still an extremely awesome and proud moment for you. I remember when I finally got to that level. It was pure awesomeness.

Here is a link to all you need to know about the HHT test

Thanks sadden

Nick, its always interesting to me that knives even when, they sharp can always be sharper.

Nice work! I'll prolly just buy a 940 one of the pros has sharpened as there is little chance I will have the patience

Nice!

The day I can cut MY hair I'll be happy.
I can cut my Caucasian friends hair easily, but asian hair just doesn't cut...
One day!

Thanks sadden

Yea, I know what ya mean. Like a obsidian scapel that is so thin you can almost see threw it and so sharp it will actually cut a Cell in half instead of tearing it in two like everything else does no matter how sharp it may be

Thanks bro, yea that 940 is a great knife.

Thanks homie, one day indeed;)

Wooo, now that's sharp.

As for HHT 5, I might need smaller abrasives. That link recommends the 10k Chosera stones

What have you been using?

.01 micron cbn stroping liquid. The kme stuff to be exact. I believe he said the .01 paste is like 160,000 grit. Also, in my experience with the HHT quest, when I stroped at .5m, it would not cut hair until I got to the .01m stuff. I guess that extra refinement was what was needed

I will also say, you know the kinda precision that is needed in the apex while sharpening, when it comes time for the strop, be very careful at maintains the correct angles or you will lose that refinement needed. That is why it was easier for me to do it on a convex edge, they are more forgiving to angle deviance on stroping but this time around I am using the kme the hole way

Surprised to hear it would not cut hair with .5m, do you mean just HHT 2 or 3 or wouldn't cut hair at all? I tend to get pretty good results with .5m.

I don't think it would cut hair in half, but it would "play the violin" or curl it, can't remember so yea, like a HHT 2 or so

Yea, that video is pretty slick. That is where I am trying to get with a .175" thick, obtuse ground, heavy use folder in elmax
..lol

I was able to achieve this off .5 micron leather, followed by flitz on a paint stick...The hair is ridiculously fine as it's from my blonde 5yr old daughter's hair brush.

That's a heck of a blade to work with! Really thick blades frustrate me, you must be a patient man :p

I'm guessing that is a Chrome or metal polish huh?
It's basically an everything polish, metal, plastic, fiber glass, ect...Works great I got the tip from someone here...also works great as a protective coating for carbon steel.

It literally took my edge from whittling thicker hair to straight cutting a super fine hair...

Good ol' Flitz!

It doesn't work as good as CBN compounds though in my experience.

But hey,
I'm probably not doing it right though cause Flitz cuts anything and polishes great
YMMV

I use the liquid form, I apply it liberally on a paint stick and allow it to dry, then strop away, reapply as necessary or get a new stick....It didn't work well on leather for me..it dried it and got rough and chalky..

Yea I'd imagine cbn compounds are light years better, especially on your wear resistant steels.
