Cutting Zip Ties...ummmhmmm......

Yeah, most plain edged knives don't do too well in zip ties. The best way is sort of prying the knife as far up and then wiggle cut. You could easily break a tip. In fact I chipped my Lahar cutting some zip ties.

If I only have one or two to cut, knife it is.
More than that, if I have access, snips it is.

I usually have a Leatherman Charge on me,
but the cutters are not worth a flip on ties.

That's about it for me, as well. I don't carry snips 24-7, but if I'm dressed, I've got a pocket knife on me and I will use what I have with me when the need arises.

If I specifically am about start a job where I know I have to cut a bunch of ties, I'll stop and go get a pair of dykes before I start the job. But for the odd tough thing that comes along, I'll cut it with my pocket knife. If I didn't expect to be able to use it, I wouldn't carry the silly thing.

For me it's not a weapon. It's not for show. It's a tool, and I will use it as a tool when I need to do so.

YMMV.

A dentist will recommend cleaning your teeth.....)

In my experience, a dentist will also recommend removing all of your wisdom teeth, doing a whitening, and putting on sealant as if they were in the car sales business selling undercoating....

I use a Harpy for zip ties. I put the tip under and pull away from what is tied (towards myself). Works perfect.

Ecactly, you always pull cuts like that towards yourself and to the side, it's not more dangerous to make cuts like that as long as you're not stupid about it. I do it all the time and have never, seriously injurred myself with a knife.

I wasn't aware of this thread earlier today, so I just cut the zip tie with a sharp, thin SAK blade. Worked great:foot:
