D.Koster Bushcraft

TexasTony it really was knife nirvana. Tom put one of his famous regrinds on a Delica I bought on the exchange that had a broken tip. It was like watching an artist watching him work freehand on that sander.Yes there were tons of knives in various stages of completion and he even let me plunder in the prototype drawer.:eek: If some of what I saw ever comes into production we will all be broke. Chickenplucker

Dan is a great guy. The decent thing to do would have been to contact him directly instead of complaining about the blade in a post for all to read. Did it dawn on you that it may have been damaged during shipping? The post office damages things and re-boxes them all the time.
While I agree with the sentiment, Tony's not trying to bash Dan, but rather to share something with his keyboard kin. After awhile, everybody here starts to feel like family (maybe I need more time away :().

Anyway, if you've read Tony's posts for any amount of time, I think you would realize that.

I wonder if you ended up with the knife he uses to mold his sheaths around by mistake? Just a thought....

It's a standard model right? so you would have one laying on the bench to mold the kydex around. I might be wrong, but I would almost lay money on it....

These were the leftovers from the Blade show, and were offered with a discount. This is not a part of the "as forged" finish :p

edit to add:

I just found out I actually paid 5 dollars more for this Blade show leftover, then what I would have to pay when I ordered it from the site.
So no discount..

I bet that knife should never have left his shop - the other DK 'Bushcraft' models folks have picture here look much better. My only true 'custom knives' came from John Greco and Fred Vollmer - and were <$130. They are all perfect! In fact, some of John's overage last year after the Blade show were 3/$100! Trying to select from his stock at a show is difficult - they are all as near perfect as you can get, as you'd expect. You related your due disappointment properly - and have nothing to apologize for.

As to the sheath... what a bad deal there, if you ordered a LH-ed leather. Bark River has a sheathmaker that can/does make any/everything! Fred Vollmer makes a fantastic manmade sheath system. John Greco seems to think of sheaths as an afterthought. I wouldn't be too tickled, after that long wait, if I received that sheath, either.

I am still amazed - at how 'perfect' a $25 Buck 110 from Wally World is - or a $150+ Bark River, for that matter. Those B R knives are true works of art - that happen to be great knives. Of my six, one is bocote wood, another G10; the rest are their lower priced handles - Micarta. All are really perfect - almost too pretty to use - works of art... very sharp, however, and their hand fit begs for them to be used. No, you got what looks like a work knife - my bet is D K will not be happy it got out. He needs to know - as do we. You did him - and us - a service by posting here. Thanks!

Martin, it's too bad Dan is on his Philmont trip, I'd like to get his take on this one. Was it offered to you as a '2nd'? Even for an 'as-forged' finish, this one should not have left the shop, period, unless you knew the condition. I'm sure Dan will make it right if you choose to return it.

Well, the bright side to all of it is that there'll be no excuses made for not bringing it out and using it!

well it is a user blade....but from the pics I seen..everybody's bushcraft blade looked great....finish wise ..I love the design and it will be a great user blade just disapointed in the overall finish of it...I will use it this weekend for sure...

Now, now ... if you are not happy (as opposed to merely not disappointed), you know Dan will be very UNhappy.

Yes, these are users, but that one does seem a bit too rough. Do Dan a favor and give him a call on this. He's a young businessman and he needs our help to improve his processes and build his business.

So. Don't be a martyr, friend, give Dan a chance to make it right.

Of course, YMMV and it's just MHO.

I agree with the last two suggestions, you shouldn't be so ready to accept work like that. Whether they are users or not, you purchased a new product, I think a little more care in finishing the knife/s would be appropriate. And from the two different examples shown so far, this doesn't seem to be a mistake in shipping a shop knife...this is not a good business plan for the maker and hopefully he will appreciate a chance to make good on these.

I believe Dan is a great knife maker and good bloke to boot but it seems he is either too busy at times or just has off days !
When my grandad passed away he left me a small sum of money, I decided to use it to buy a Koster Nessie and have my grandads name etched on the blade to remember him by.When I mentioned it to Dan he said no problem and asked me to e-mail him my grandads name etc.
When the knife actually came there was no name etched ? The finish was worse than yours Tex which doesn't bother me as I sanded the as forged finish down anyway and all my knives are users but I was really dissapointed that it did not have my grandads name on as that was the whole reason for getting the knife !!!

Well, I don't know what happened to TTD's knife, but Dan made me one of my favorite knives... I definitely got the sense that he was busy (trying to keep all of us happy) when I bought my monster nessie from him. This knife is like an ice-cold beer, it puts a smile on my face every time I hold it (and I post a pic every chance I get!):

Good point and I think it is important to toss an issue like this out to the group for consideration as opposed to just quietly going back to Dan. It's only appropriate the group kicks this around and effectively provides a consensus for Dan. Yes, individual knife-makers serve individual buyers but individual buyers are going to have their own picky preferences. The maker needs to know what "the masses" think in order to succeed. I appreciate that it was brought to everyone's attention because I cancelled two orders with Dan recently myself, without a complaint to Dan - because I felt like I was the only one and I wasn't going to bother him with my own "picky preferences." Everybody else seemed happy, why should I come in and try to change everything when I could just go buy a knife some place else? If I had brought it up for discussion, I might have realized that it was somethin worth bringing up to Dan that would help him be successful - which of course serves all our iwn selfich needs but, we all win that way anyway.

This has turned out to be a constrcutive and intelligent discussion and, reading through it, I have to say that I am proud to be associated with the prople who have contributed to this thread (and BF in general). I think that by the time Dan gets back and has a chance to read this he will be getting a fair shake and a helping hand. He's working his butt off trying to make us all happy. I think that this collective feedback is appropriate - feel out the rest of the group to see if you're just being picky or is the issue needs to be brought up.

Jeff H I agree with you 100%. I just wish all of this wasnt happening at the beginning of Dans 12 day trip. Building a consensus without his opinion seems to me unfair. Chickenplucker

Nice to see that I'm not the only person who can't set eyelets without them splitting. Although I usually only have one split in a sheath. Still, I was worried that I was the only one. :)

First, I would like to say that I really like his work. I do not make posts just to say BEAUTIFUL KNIFE, or whatever, but he does do very nice work. I would not be worried about owning and using one of his blades and in fact, I am waiting for a review of that big one so many have ordered.

Now, I am going to give my point of view as if this was my first look and first impression of Dans work. I am going to go back to a couple of old sayings my father use to say.

''A man who is to lazy to shave when he wakes up in the morning, makes me wonder, what else is he to lazy to do?''

He also said,

''You can make love to a 1000 women, and never be called Don Juan, but s#ck one d#ck and you are a c#ck s#cker for life.''

Applying that logic here, I would be wondering what it looks like under that handle, and if the heat treating was done correctly. In short, I would not ever be interested in owning something Dan was making. Again, this would be my first impression and seeing these two examples.

We are all trying to be constructive here, and having knives go out looking like that, is in my first impression opinion, would make me wonder if Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder is in quality control. While I know this is not the case, we have to think about people who have never seen his past work. We are talking about expanding his business, well that means NEW PEOPLE who will at some point have to have a first impression.

I can see late at night, and being tired, once or twice having a knife slip by with a small scratch in it, but to be honest, this is like buying a new car with rust or a dent on it, not the dealer forgetting to wash it. How many would accept that car?

Like I said, I have seen to much of his work to know something happened that was not supposed to. Maybe it was a knife used to make sheaths, but that is still not a good excuse. Paint that knife red or something so it never gets shipped by accident. This is not the norm from what I have seen at least, and I am 100% sure he will make it right for both of you.

Wow!

I think I should also be doing business with you ... this is a GREAT attitude.

Folks, remember: you can bring up anything (well, almost anything) so long as you treat people with respect. That old 'golden rule' is more than a cliche.

Point taken and thank you for expressing a dissenting view without hostility. I am amazed at the way people can discuss things here without getting abusive. Sorry, I am somewhat new here and you guys just really make me feel good about having hung around for a while. W

This is really a discussion that maybe Dan shouldn't be part of. Dan wants to know what we expect and I think we are often inhibited in our comments when the makers are involved. When that happens, they don't get honest feedback. Given the civil nature of the initial comments and ensuing discussion, this is just fine, I think. I am surprised at the comments of even those who have misgivings about the discussion - very civil, very "gentlemanly." I am personally proud of the posters in this thread and I think Dan can be as well.

Stand over here with me for a minute and see if you might not see what I am seeing. I think this "public" discussion is good for us and good for Dan. Not that I am right and you are wrong but we are just seeing it from different perspectives and my perspective comes from not having been dissatisfied and just keeping my mouth shut about it. Why does Dan need to hear from one whiney, over-picky customer (me) if everyone else seems happy? Well, maybe everyone else isn't happy and they're doing the same thing I am doing. That's not fair to Dan. If we throw these things out among ourselves we get a broader perspective.

If several of us were physically togther, say at a gathering, speaking among ourselves, we would express our disappointments to each other to gauge the feelings of the others present - to see if we're not just being picky or whiney, right? So, the forum is a very public place but how else do we kick these things around? I once had a loooong PM discussion with a knife-maker about some serious quality issues and they were never resolved. I still have one of the dozen "bad ones," and this ONE happened to be the worst, and no replacement to date. I wish I could have felt comfortable bringing it up on the forum because others might have kicked in and the maker gets a fairer shake in the end rather than many of us quietly "going away" and buying elsewhere because I know I will never buy from that particular guy again - period. Everyone is afraid to question anything because the guy has a following that would attack anyone who would raise the question "is this OK or are my expectations too high?" I have since heard a lot of the same concern from others - privately.

Honestly, I withdrew two orders quietly and accepted that Dan may think me a turd for waiting until they were almost ready. I took a hit there myself as Dan may think less of me now so I did Dan and myself a disservice.

I like Dan, from what little I know of him, and I think he works very hard to put great knives in our hands. I think that it's a good thing to kick this around so we feel better about whether our expectations are reasonable or we should just shop someplace else. I had chosen to "shop someplace else." I have changed my mind about that after this thread. I may have lost my place in line but I now realize that my expectations are not unreasonable. I hate to "bother" a maker with my personal concerns about their knives when I may not be his "market." Through this thread I realize that I really amd and, if anyone did wrong by Dan, it wasn't the guy who hit the rest of us up for our feelings on his concerns - it was I, the guy who kept his concerns to himself and didn't buy from Dan.
