I see that CJ is posting and I'm hoping that he'll read this thread.

I talked to Chuck Buck about adding D2 to the 110's blade options in the CS and he seemed very open to the idea.

Chuck, if your reading this...has that idea a chance of makeing it? You guy's were nice enough to do a sprint run of 112's in the CS. I was hoping for something similar with D2...

That would mean that Buck would have to buy a 4' x 8' sheet of .125" D2...with no guarantee of anyone else buying a blade/knife made from it...

Why not send Buck a 2" x 12" x .125" D2 blank and ask them to punch out a 110 blade and mount it in your choice of liner/scales for you??? At the new CS prices, of course...

That would only require a few minutes extra work for the Custom Shop...

Well I have two 1.5 inch by 12in D2 Blanks in the shop. That should be good for 4 blades. Heck yea, I'd be happy to do that (really want the Paul Bos stamp with D2) esp. if the blade charge is say the same as the 420hc satin and all other the same.:D:D

But, I think the idea is being looked into.

I think enough people would be interested in it to quickly fill up a sheet.

Most people ordering from the custom shop expect a bit of a delay so it's not like they have to have a ton of D2 sitting around.

I'm still waiting for a Randall which I ordered 3 years ago, so I'm willing to wait a bit (another year in the Randall case) for things to be a certain way:)

well my two centavos worth...
if it would help
i would pre pay my share on a sheet of D2
or any other custom steel that they do not currently use!

now i think that would make a difference i think...

that if you get, say 40 of the 110 blades from a sheet the size they normally order ,

to let us die hards know that we can pre pay and when they get to what ever number they get from a sheet that they make the knives to send out...

well from when the CS was down you would not have thought so!! but that may have been jest a few, was it?

of course those of us ordering would have to sign that we know it will not be a set date! that it could take half a year or longer to get all the orders it takes to fill a sheet!

such a thought ... i will have to ask pete how many 110 blades do come from the std size sheet of steel that they use!!

Flat, The way blades are profiled in a shop and given the size bar stock you mention it will only net two 110 blades. DM

I would be game, within reason. If given a quote that I find acceptable they could simply charge my card a non-refundable deposit like Randall does and drop me a line then it's near done and they need the full payment.

I'm game if they are :-)

Ouch!!! David, you'll have to explain to me why you can't get two blades out of a 12x1.5 piece of bar stock. I have two pieces too.

can't do anything over the weekend but I will check into this on Monday to see what is up. I will have Sarah follow up.

Flat, Ok, now I see you stated TWO bars of stock. Excuse me I didn't see that! Yes, 4 blades are possible from both pieces of material. Two from each. DM

Flat, I replied and now don't see it. But-- excuse me for I didn't see you had TWO bars of stock. Yes, 4 is possible from that, 2 from each. DM

Boy I glad to hear that....I was thinking "if Buck needs a 12in piece of barstock for every knife the cost is really high on a 110"

I tell you guys that I think we won't be needing any of those suggestions about buying a sheet or sending in bar stock etc. I'm thinking that CJ and Chuck gonna decide they like the D2 blade option idea and add it to the line of options.

And I have an idea on how they can create an economy of scale for production using D2 but I'm going to start another thread for that.

B-M uses it, as does Queen and others. It's a bit harder to sharpen than 440C - which is harder to do than 420HC. It's a tool steel, and not as stain resistant as 420HC. We already have S30V, which I feel is pretty darned good. Still, I'd get one - as long as I don't have to sign something and raise my right hand - that once put me on a ship wearing a funny hat for nearly four years. Money? Ha ha ha! "Change? All I have left is change... just change..." How much is a concern, of course. Oddly, I'd rather have A-2.

I know d-2 is a good steel, what is it compared to ?I would probably buy one if its offered .

Razor, It compares closely to BG42. Which is the stainless version of that steel. Realize D2 is not a stainless. Still, of all the steels discussed here nothing compares to S30V in many areas which is already offered. DM

I think it should also be pointed out that D2's chromium is very near that of stainless making it a "near-stainless." It will pit in saltwater but with typical use and moderate care, most people won't notice its not SS, but tool steel.

Here is a site with a lot of info on D2 and most other common knife steels. Great Resource, I suggest everyone save this link to their favorites if they are interested at all in knife steel.

I have both D2 (Dozier, BM 710) and S30V (BM Mini-Rukus) blades, and while I like them both when it comes to edge-holding, S30V is a lot easier to sharpen and seems to take a finer edge. So I'm not sure that D2 would be all that preferable to S30V, which you can already get.
