D2 110 blade option for CS

I've been carrying and using a Benchmade 913 in D2 for about 6 weeks now and I am really impressed with the steel. I'm worried about staining or rusting but I have not had any problems yet.

Messer, I've heard your type comment time and again about this steel from many others who have used it. It must be just real close to a stainless and the CPM version of D2 is even better. DM

I was given a Charles May Custom fixed blade in D2 and I have a griptilian in it as well. Both of those blades are outstanding in terms of sharpness and edge retention. And I have not had any trouble touching up the edges with a washita stone and a little stropping. ZERO issues around staining:thumbup:

Hence, a Paul Bos D2 blade is highly appealing to me besides, its another reason to buy and additional Buck knife. I several in S30V, BG42, 154CM, & Damascus.....but NO D2.

I was hoping Sarah would have got back to us by now.

Visualize this fellas:

A custom shop 110 with smooth buffalo no rivets, NS, & a black oxide coated D2 blade. With a black sheath of course.

I was thinking of somethng along that line but with pins, finger groove, and serrated blade, for evening wear. Your idea has merits.

Big John

I'm fine with most of that - just leave my blades naked please.
what ! you like bare steel?
please could we have some chrome plated blades?
fell in love with chrome on blades in boot camp!
D2 will rust...humm

of course i liked the old thick 440C also.;)
have used s30v and like it ...
would like to get some Pendagraff steel ...

To each his own. I carried a standard 1095 bladed Ka-Bar in the field (run hard, put away wet, etc.) for just shy of 10 years, She's got the scars to prove it, but rusting was not one of her issues - then again, she came parkarized/painted (whatever - not much of that is left now). Same thing with the mostly carbon-steel slippies I carry. Maybe I just "like" routine knife TLC. Then again, that's why I usually hang out on the Traditional Forum. ;)

Bring on the (bare) D2, 3V, 9V, BG-42, whatever 110 blades. I just don't like coatings.

And...I gotta ask: chrome blades in boot camp??? ;)

yea ... them flashy pointy things on the ends of the show guns..
yep that 21 count manual of arms looked good with that
flash & shine all moving the same way in the sun light..
some times right past the end of your nose!!

was jest teasing ya there warrior.. ;)
have had lot of carbon blades & jest a little care and they stay nice..
its is jest a concern on a lost knife that dont get any care
i do like SS as it shines better
for user i like plain saten finish
for display i like high polish and coated blades...
i dont "collect" the users .. i use them..

Ahhh - Got it. You got chrome guns in BC!!??! - Must have been a Squid thing. LOL. ;)

"Back in my day" (which was not as long ago as for some of you) we were already using "the black rifle" for all of that in Boot'. I do know my fellow Lethernecks have a pretty respectable Drill Team that still throws those shiney things around. My M1 though, is all walnut and gray-green park. ;)

I heard a rumor that the Custom Shop may use up its old inventory of ATS-34 for CS 110 blades. I don't know how much that may be but I personally like it.:thumbup::cool:

What'cha think about dat fella's?

From my part more than welcomed any new steel option on the custom shops selection, even if these is the D2,but far as I concerned relying on some internet sources, everybody so happy the performance of the D2,but when the sharpening comes many of them states the worth from all!But I really like to see some great quality carbon steel like SK-5 ,could be fantastic with the BOS heat threatening, tuned arround 60Hrc.Dont you think?

If the sky is the limit and we can have anything, I'd go for CPM 9V with a thin grind. I bet it would be murder to machine though...

I was not familiar with SK5 so I looked into it. It is a Japanese tool steel similar to 1080. Cold Steel seems to use it quite a lot.

karesz68, what is you experiance with this steel?

I have several japanese knives, hunting,an kitchen.SK-5 Hattori/SOG bowie Hrc58,Fujiwara SK-4 gyuto, petty Hrc 60 those are workhorses, you can use even abuse those knives,There is no problem if you hitting accidentaly some bones ,easy to resharpen almost on everything, those are tool steels,no so exp.My favorite :Masamoto virgin steel Petty and western deba Hrc 62.Incredible sharpness, really long edge ret,and still easy sharpening, but queit pricy.Kanetsune hunting knife blue steel 61-62Hrc,Hiromoto santoku super blue steel 62-63Hrc.They are superior regarding sharpness, and retention.Resharpening is a real challenge, even thoug only the blade core is made of that steel.I dont think is a good choice for outdoor use.Reasons:quiet exp, really delicate,(if you hit a hard obj, like bone you get a nick or chip right away),Hard resarpening. And here comes to tricky part.SK-5,SK-4,Virgin steel, you can sharpen with almost everything, fom waterstone, throught ceramic rods or benchstone, till concrit bloks,Blue steel takes nothing but waterstone.I tryed on ceamic rods(spyderco),and on ceramich bencsstone, with same resoult.Nicks allaround.Five minutes work and you get a nice serrated knife or saw.
I hope is helped!

Must have been...No chrome on our M14's in '69...

Only chrome I saw in boot camp was the spearpoint on the top of the guidon...The Right Guide had to remove it every time we ate chow...Otherwise, some other platoon would steal it...

...Like we did... :D

Here's a pic of the guidon...This is ITR, immediately following boot camp...(same people; different camp)...the spearpoint is turned sideways, but it resembles a playing-card "spade"...

I keep thinking what a nice knife a custom D2 110 would be....in my waiting and thinking about that I've started eyeballing a BM Stryker. I've got a D2 Grip and I know BM does very good D2 blades. I don't know how long I can hold out for a 110D2;)

Are you kidding? The hand guns we had on board ship were the basic 1911 .45 caliber.
They normally had more dust, rust or god knows what. I think the supply system had them listed for $58 a piece. :o

I have a BM Stryker and the dimensions are much the same as a 110. I'll work on getting a pic side by side.
