D2 and shaving sharp?

The old adage was," D-2 takes a poor edge and holds it forever". That was not true . The problem was that many makers were trying to grind and sharpen D-2 the same as if it was 10XX steel. It is TOUGH, and does not grind or sharpen fast. If you take your time and sharpen it to proper angles, it will get very sharp. As the others have pointed out, D-2 is not made to make straight razors, It is made to make serious cutting tools, like dies. The proper edge won't be as smooth, but will cut for a long time.

Dan is correct..a worn 120 ceramic to a felt wheel with white compound and it will lift finger prints if the angle is correct...I use to slack belt convexed edge on my hollow grinds...but I do it now with my contact wheel takes about one pass each side to raise the bur, knock it off and your are ready to rock.Grind them thin and they are cutters....This method can be done with any steel and the results are the same if the HT is correct......
